1. I brought my eyes closer to the shining light
And raised my forehead to the raging flames

And my assumptions retreated into a mirage

4. A cloud appeared in the sky before my eyes
So I stopped, and there it stayed, away from me

And heard the clatter of the raging storm

6. O morning, the sun has nothing but brightness
O night, the stars have nothing but clarity

7. O fire, between my breasts the fire has
O light, where is the light filling my eyes?

8. The day took my confusion and sorrow
And evening brought my tears and lamentations

9. Even nature turned away and was defiant
And denied the wretched fugitive!

10. If I have no refuge in your affection
To whom do I voice my plea and longing?

11. I chose the life of a captive but could not endure
Patience, and madness broke out of my captivity

12. You gave me freedom of flight and left me
To the garden of the enamored, obsessed with light

13. And you pointed me to the sky but I did not fly
And returned the eye of the caged bird

14. Who forgot the sky and now does not know a world
Veiled from him by the captivity of years

15. The time of wandering has passed, and my time
To you in my youth and passion has ended

16. After you I have not seen what captivates my sight
In the gardens, so nothing allures me

17. So I cried out to inspire my old melodies
But they staggered and stumbled in my laments

18. And I went down to beg the shadows but they choked me
Until the branches were no longer branches

19. So I returned to my old den, and in me there is sorrow
Overflowing me, and humiliation baring me

20. When it saw me, my eye turned moist
From pain, and the heart roared after tranquility

21. And memory flashed in me, so I denied, refuting
My eye, and accusing my certainty of falsehood

22. And I woke from dementia, and in me there is
The dejection of one depressed, and the silence of grief

23. So open for me the door which you closed
Off from me, and bring the chain that does not chafe

24. Let me water the heart with the wine of acceptance
And sleep, at the dawn of affection, my eyes

25. And return me escaping to the captivity of my youth
Having passed from the journey of those passionate nights

26. It deserted life at your support, unfettered,
And came to you seeking it with the eye of a captive!
