1. I wept for her passionately while the doves cooed,
He sways without tears while yours flow continuously.
١. بكيت لها شجواً وهنَّ الحمائمُ
ينحن بلا دمع ودمعكَ ساجمُ
2. When grief overcame us and darkness enveloped us,
The ruins of homes and their adornments vanished.
٢. ولما علونا الحزنَ واعتسفت بنا
رسوم الدِّيار اليعملاتُ الرواسمُ
3. We turned our mounts with their necks towards the beloved's abode,
As those landmarks had taught us crying for them.
٣. لوينا باعناق المطيّ إلى اللِّوى
وقد علّمتنا البثّ تلك المعالمً
4. If the once familiar dwellings are now desolate,
And the enlivening ruins are now lifeless and still.
٤. لئن أوحش الربعُ الذي كان آنسا
وأقوَت من الحَيِّ الرسومُ الطواسمُ
5. How many a night there I attained its bliss,
Followed by another, while defiance overcomes separation.
٥. فكم ليلةٍ فيه وصلتُ نعيمَها
بأخرى وأنفُ الهجرِ بالوصلِ راغمُ
6. The son of Hashim watered the plants of joy with it,
When cares are dispelled by his comfort.
٦. سقى منبتَ اللّذات منها ابنُ هاشم
إذا انهملت من راحتيه الغمائمُ
7. The Imam who established religion, his sword's edge is sharp,
Firmly fixed in the hand of God it slashes and destroys.
٧. إمام أقام الدين حدُّ حسامه
طريراً ومنه في يد الله قائمُ
8. In his right hand shines a light like a burning fire,
With eyes on the lands from his abode loftily placed.
٨. ويزهرُ في يمناهُ نورٌ من الظبا
له من رؤوس الدَّارِ عينٌ كمائمُ
9. Swords, when the sides of the frontiers are tested by them,
On their necks are marks which guide like flags.
٩. سيوفٌ إذا اعتلت جهات ثغورها
فمنهن في أعناقهن تمائمُ
10. Every Thursday the atmosphere is fragrant with its scent,
As the executioner tightens his grip and constricts its breath.
١٠. بكلِّ خميسٍ طَبّق الجوّ نقعُهُ
وضيَّقَ مسراهُ الجلادُ الصالدمُ
11. It seems the scent of musk has blinded his eye,
And the keen cutting blades have blinded his eyelids.
١١. كأن مثارَ النقعِ إثمدُ عينهِ
وأشفارَ جفنيهِ الشفارُ الصوارمُ
12. Birds and beasts take their fill from it when it moves,
As the brave youths gaze upon it.
١٢. تعد عليه الطيرُ والوحشُ قوتها
إذا سار والتفت عليه القشاعمُ
