ومحجل لبس الظلام

1. Clad in speckled clothes he walked in the shade
And waded into the body of the morning

١. ومُحَجَّلٍ لَبِسَ الظَّلا
مَ وخاضَ في جِسمِ الصَّباحِ

2. With his blackness he contains more charm
Than salty white has to offer

٢. يَحْوِي بحُسن سَوادِه
فَضْلاً على البِيضِ المِلاحِ

3. When you see his pride as he faces
The flag of success, his beauties call out

٣. وترى بغُرَّتِه إذا
قابَلْتَه عَلَمَ النجاحِ

4. To him from all directions
His sight quenches the thirsty

٤. تَدْعُو محاسنُه العيو
نَ إليه من كلِّ النواحي

5. Better than fresh cold water
His ears nearly answer when

٥. وتنوبُ للظمآنِ رُؤْ
يَتُه عن الماءِ القَراحِ

6. Someone calls out crying
He sang and rejoiced to the breeze and kept dancing cheerfully

٦. وتكاد أُذْناه تُجيبُ إ
ذا أصاخ عن الصِّياح

7. He walked tipsily and swayed
Like one intoxicated with pleasure

٧. غَنَّى وطَرَّبَ بالصَّهي
ل وظلّ يَرْقُص للمِراح

8. He looked up to the wild sky and said
What bothers you, making you so gloomy

٨. ومشى العِرَضْنى وانثنى
كالمُنْتَشي من شُربِ راح

9. If I were free I would suggest
One with four feet shod with the winds

٩. وسَما إلى وَحْشِ البَرا
حِ وقال ما لك من بَراح

10. Before him we never saw
A bird that could fly without wings

١٠. ذاك الذي لو كنتُ مقْ
ترِحاً لكان من اقتراحي

11. Handsome, and more beautiful than him
In my eyes and than meadow flowers

١١. ذو أَرْبَعٍ قد أُنعِلَتْ
بالأرْبَعِ الهُوجِ الرياح

12. And softer than dewy lips that reveal
Gaping holes like strawberry patches

١٢. ما إن رَأَيْنا قبلَه
طيراً يطير بلا جناح

13. A line came which taught me
A precious string of eloquent words

١٣. حَسَنٌ وأحسَنُ منه في
عَيْنِي ومن زَهْرِ البِطاح

14. I adorned my verses with it
And forgot my woeful laments

١٤. ومِن الشِّفاه اللُّمْيِ تُبْ
دي عن ثغورٍ كالأقاحِ

١٥. خَطٌّ أتى فأفادوني
دُرّاً من الكَلِمِ الفِصاح

١٦. وشَّحْتُ ألفاظي به
وشُغِلت عن ذات الوِشاح
