1. The dawn's sweet-basil has appeared,
Green, blossoming with flowers.

2. The banner of morning has shaded,
Unfurled in the East's watchtower.

3. So the meteors from dawn's raid
Thunder, quaking in fright,

4. As the darkness of night in its wings
Unleashes the lightning’s bright light.

5. The horizon where winds collide
With rain teardrops, glows red.

6. The clouds are adorned with pearls,
The lightning, a bejeweled sword,

7. Its ornamented scabbard glittering
As it’s brandished through the air.

8. The zephyr bears such a fine fragrance,
The flowers perfuming its hair.

9. The stream’s like a polished blade
In the raiment of light sheathed.

10. And many a voice and tale
For the birds has it bequeathed.

11. So the leaves of the trees have inclined,
Singing it grateful praise.

12. The morning breeze manifests itself
Stumbling in the garden’s lace.

13. The wine cup in the boon companion’s hand
Dispels his gloomy cares.

14. The wine drew on the ancient fire
Before vineyards were theirs.

15. The stream in the meadow plays
With flowers in its clasp,

16. The gorgeous pearls adorn themselves,
Dewdrops the branches asp.

17. Beauty manifests in the world,
The garden dazzles the eyes.

18. You remind me of the beloved’s bower,
The apple amid the quince.

19. The drinker of the wondrous juice
Between berries and pomegranate,

20. Turns his delicious mouth that sipped
The exquisite nectar.

21. It came and went for the passionate ones,
Intoxicating with its tale.

22. How many souls have been enraptured by it!
Yet time denies its avail.

23. O bending branch, inclining in bloom!
If you would heed my love plaints

24. That I pour from the well of sadness -
Who discloses intimate complaints

25. To the moon fluttering midst the clouds?
In you dissolves all fortitude,

26. The patience knot undone by you
If only you understood!

27. How many nights I spent awake, keeping vigil
While creation slept in peace.

28. I conversed with the stars till
I taught my eyelids sleep’s release.

29. I watch the moon of darkness’ robe,
But you have disappeared from my heart’s realm

30. My soul is not in constancy, though it appears
Leave it to persevere in yearning!

31. Had you named it estrangement, it would not
Have turned away or fled from you.

32. Our Sultan, binding pacts, taught it patience amidst wars
Vanquishing the South, gloriously.

33. Most invincible, though light of weapons,
The whites have not ceased coveting,

34. The care of God manifests in him,
Aided by fortune he is victorious.

35. The people under his reign enjoys spoils of war
Beyond all counting, wondrously.

36. My Master! Gem of the age! Rule however you see fit,
Every king and kingdom belong to you!

37. None can depict me, neither my essence nor my aspect -
Are you king or angel true?

38. Where your armies halt, victory is theirs
To conquer and triumph assuredly.

39. And God’s custom is manifest in you -
To conquer unbelief most certainly.

40. O proof of God in perfection!
Eclipsing the full moon in its rise

41. You came with might and exaltation
And time smiles at your prize.

42. Exulting in beauty’s raiment
The full moon is eclipsed once more.
