1. God tended a flower of carnation kin
Whose scent told of a love and radiant cheek
١. رعى الله زهراً ينتمي لقرنفل
حكى عَرْفَ من أهوى وإشراقَ خَدِّهِ
2. And stalk shot up in lofty aloofness
As my beloved was aloof to love's entreaty
٢. ومنبته في شاهق متمنّعٍ
كما امتنع المحبوب في تيهِ صدِّهِ
3. When the boughs in a garden lean down, I yearn
To embrace each twig longing for his form
٣. أميل إذا الأغصان مالت بروضةٍ
أعانق منها القُضْبَ شوقاً لقدِّهِ
4. And when the soft wind stirs, I swoon outright
And love the fragrance from his dewy skin
٤. وأهفو لخفّاق النسيم إذا سرى
وأهوى أريج الطيب من عَرْقِ نَدِّهِ
