1. They brought me a bright lantern, radiant
Like the cheek of my beloved, and the sweetness of his breath.
١. أَتَوْني بنوَّار يروق نَضَارةً
كخدّ الذي أهوى وطيب تنفُّسِهْ
2. They brought it from a lofty, aloof place—
The aloofness of that gazelle in the shade of its shelter.
٢. وجاءوا به من شاهقٍ متمنع
تمنُّعَ ذاك الظبي في ظلّ مكنِسِهْ
3. May God protect a lover made bashful
By a flower whose beauty told of the charm of its companion.
٣. رعى الله مني عاشقاً متقنعاً
بزهر حكى في الحسن خدَّ مؤنِّسِهْ
4. And if the fluttering breeze blew a waft
Its fragrance recounted a pleasing tale of well-being.
٤. وإنْ هبَّ خفّاقُ النسيم بنفحة
حكتْ عَرْفَهُ طيباً قضى بتأنُّسِهْ
