1. Thirsty camels in summer, their thirst unquenched,
Arrived while the heat was boiling the kettles.
١. وَما حائِماتٌ تَمَّ في الصَيفِ ظَمؤُها
فَجاءَت وَلِلرَمضاءِ غَليُ المَراجِلِ
2. When they saw the sweet water they went to drink,
But saw death waiting there by the watering holes.
٢. فَلَمّا رَأَينَ الماءَ عَذباً وَأَقبَلَت
عَلَيهِ رَأَينَ المَوتَ دونَ المَناهِلِ
3. So they turned back, their thirst still unslaked,
Having sensed the venom of the deadly snakes.
٣. فَعادَت وَلَم تَنقَع غَليلاً وَقَد طَوَت
حَشاها عَلى سمِّ الأَفاعي القَواتِلِ
4. With more longing for you than I can tell,
And grief for you, though from you I've gained nothing.
٤. بِأَكثَرَ مِن شَوقي إِلَيكَ وَلَوعَتي
عَلَيكَ وَإِن لَم أَحظَ مِنكَ بِطائِلِ
