1. The neighing of meadows and the swaying of slender palm trees,
Without them the fruits of victory cannot be plucked.
١. صَليلُ المَواضي وَاِهتِزازُ القَنا السُمرِ
بِغَيرِهِما لا يُجتَنى ثَمرُ النَصرِ
2. The patience of the young man in dire straits is outstanding,
Yet it points to the path of glory.
٢. وَصَبرُ الفَتى في المَأزِقِ الضَنكِ فادِحٌ
وَلكِنَّهُ أَهدى طَريقٍ إِلى الفَخرِ
3. Under the darkness of adversity the faces of praise shine,
And the gathering of glory in the horde of nobility.
٣. وَتَحتَ ظَلامِ النَقعِ تُشرِقُ أَوجُهُ ال
ثَناءِ وَجَمعُ المَجدِ في فِرقَةِ الوَفرِ
4. Nothing enslaves the free like forgiveness when
An ignoramus commits offense, and the generosity of the magnanimous.
٤. وَما اِستَعبَدَ الأَحرارَ كَالعَفوِ إِن جَنى
جَهولٌ وَفَضلُ الصَدرِ في سَعَةِ الصَدرِ
5. He whom war has not lauded, his name remains obscure,
Even if his forefathers were honorable, forgotten.
٥. وَمَن لَم تُنَوّه بِاِسمِهِ الحَربُ لَم يَزَل
وَإِن كَرُمَت آباؤُهُ خامِلَ الذِكرِ
6. When war envelops supporters, it gives birth
To a preconception of violence against the enemy.
٦. إِذا غَشِيَ الحَربَ العَوانَ تَمَخَّضَت
وَقَد لَقَحَت عَن فتكَةٍ في العدى بِكرِ
7.
The ranks of the exalted, were it not for the revered one,
٧. خِلالُ عُلىً لَولا المُعَظَّمُ أعجزَت
طَرائِقُها الأَملاكَ بَعدَ أَبي بَكرِ
8. Their ways would have exhausted empires after Abu Bakr.
٨. هِلالٌ وَبَدرٌ أَشرَقا فاِبتِهالُنا
إِلى اللَهِ إِبقاءُ الهِلالِ مَعَ البَدرِ
9. A crescent and full moon shone so our supplication
To God is the crescent remains with the full moon.
٩. مَليكٌ إِذا ما جالَ في مَتنِ ضامِرٍ
لِيَومِ وَغىً أَبصَرَت بَحراً عَلى بَحرِ
10. A king, when he prances on an obedient steed
On a day of turmoil, seas upon seas can be seen.
١٠. عَليمٌ بِتَصريفِ القَنا فَرِماحُهُ
مَواقِعُها بَينَ التَرائِبِ وَالنَحرِ
11. Knowledgeable in spear throwing so his spears
Land between the ribs and the neck.
١١. إِذا عَلَّ في صَدرِ المُدَجَّجِ عامِلاً
بَدا عَلُّهُ فَوقَ السِنانِ عَلى الظَهرِ
12. When he ascends the chest of the armored, working
His ascendance appears atop the spearpoints and back.
١٢. وَما مُشبِلٌ من أُسد خَفّانَ باسِلٌ
يَذودُ الرَدى عَن أُمِّ شِبلَينِ في خِدرِ
13. No cowardly lion, but a ferocious deadly lion
Warding off harm from the cubs' mother in her lair.
١٣. هزَبرٌ إِذا اِجتازِ الأُسودُ بغيلِهِ
فَأَشجَعُها خافي الخُطى خافِتُ الزارِ
14. Hebrews, when the lions pass with their cubs,
The bravest of them soft of step, gentle of movement.
١٤. حَوالَيهِ أَشلاءُ الوُحوشِ نَضيدَةٌ
غَريضٌ عَلى مُستكرهٍ صائِكِ الدَفرِ
15.
Around him the limbs of beasts, accumulated
١٥. بِوادٍ تَحاماهُ الأُسودُ مَهابَةً
وَنَكَّبَ عَن مَسراهُ وَالجَةُ السَفرِ
16. Growling at the abhorred, screaming with claws bared.
In a valley the lions fear it
١٦. بِأَعظَمَ مِنهُ في القُلوبِ مَهابَةً
وَإِن غَضَّ مِنها بِالطَلاقَةِ وَالبِشرِ
17. And recoil from its plateau, and the rugged journey.
With greater fear than it in hearts
١٧. بِكُلِّ فَتىً مِن آلِ أَيّوبَ لَم يَزَل
دِفاعاً لِخَطبٍ أَو سِداداً عَلى ثَغرِ
18. Though it lowers its gaze affably and cheerfully.
With each lad of the Ayyubids it never ceased
١٨. إِذا اِستَلأَموا يَومَ النِزالِ حَسِبتَهُم
أُسودَ العَرينِ الغُلبِ في غابَةِ السُمرِ
19. To defend appeals or fortify a frontier.
When they take the reins on battle day you’d think them
١٩. فَلا وَزَرٌ مَن بَأسِهِ لِعُداتِهِ
وَلَو وَقَلَت كَالعُصمِ في شامِخٍ وَعرِ
20. The black lions of conquest in the forest of blondes.
So no burden whoever's might to his equipment
٢٠. وَلَو حاوَلَ المِريخُ في الأُفقِ مَنعَها
لَخَيَّمَ ما بَينَ النَعائِمِ وَالغَفرِ
21. And even if scarce as a wrist on a towering palm tree.
If Mars attempted prevention in the horizon
٢١. فَيا أَيُّها المَلكُ المُعَظَّمُ دَعوَةً
إِلَيكَ لمَطوِيّ الضُلوعِ عَلى جَمرِ
22. It would hover between delights and the horizon.
So O exalted king, a call
٢٢. غَريبٌ إِذا ما حَلَّ مِصراً أَبى لَهُ
وَشيكُ النَوى إِلا اِرتِحالاً إِلى مِصرِ
23. To you by one crumpled by fiery coals.
A stranger, if he lodges in Egypt, renounces it
٢٣. لَهُ غُنيَةٌ عَن غَيرِكُم مِن قَناعَةٍ
وَأَمّا إِلى مَعروفِكُم فَأَخو فَقرِ
24. Yet soon to depart to Egypt.
He has independence from other than you in contentment
٢٤. فَحَتّامَ لا أَنفَكُّ في ظَهرِ سَبسَبٍ
أُهَجّرُ أَو في بَطنِ دَوّيَةٍ قَفرِ
25. And as for your benevolence he is a brother in need.
So for sure I do not cease upon the back of Sabsab
٢٥. أُشَقِّقُ قَلبَ الشَرقِ حَتّى كَأَنَّني
أُفَتِّشُ في سَودائِهِ عَن سَنا الفَجرِ
26. Wandering or in the belly of desolate Dawiyah
Splitting the heart of the East as if
٢٦. وَيَقبَحُ بي أَن أَرتَجي مِن سِواكُمُ
نَوالاً وَأَن يُعزى إِلى غَيرِكُم شُكري
