1. A flatterer to the mean, deceived
By their feigned respect and honor for him,
١. وَمُدِلٍّ عَلى الأَخِلّاءِ مُغتَرٍّ
بِإِكرامِهِم لَهُ وَاِحتِرامِه
2. He closed the door of dignity against himself; no friend
Finds him now, except for vileness in his grasping.
٢. سَدَّ بابَ الحَياءِ مِنهُ فَلا يَلـ
ـقى صَديقاً إِلّا بِقبحِ اِجتِرامِه
3. Greedy and crafty, fostered by a parasite,
A shameless wheedler - how tired I am of his bargaining,
٣. واغِلٌ وارِشٌ نَماهُ طُفَيلٌ
أَرشَمٌ قَد مَلِلتُ مِن إِبرامِه
4. Complaining to me of the hardship of his state,
Wasting and reddening him through his nakedness.
٤. يَتَشَكّى إِلَيَّ رِقَّةَ حالٍ
أَسقَمَتهُ وَغَيَّضَت مِن عُرامِه
5. He seeks acquittal from one with wounded hands,
Deceived by the sores and tumors he sees on him.
٥. يَطلُبُ البُرءَ مِن مَريضِ الأَيادي
غَرَّهُ ما رَآهُ مِن أَورامِه
6. But another goes beyond him in meanness,
Rather, he sees him as a spark of his own firebrand.
٦. مِثلُهُ بَل يَفوقُهُ في التَكَدّي
بَل يَراهُ شَرارَةً مِن ضِرامِه
