1. Tears poured from my eyes and my heart filled up
With burning embers, and my body was ravaged by tribulation

2. And I die of grief whenever
Stories of the martyr of Karbala cross my heart

3. He is the boy murdered unjustly, and he
Relying on his father the Doer of great deeds

4. I grieve for him while an ignited fire
Continues roasting my inward parts and thoughts unrestfully

5. Is it proper that I feel comfort and peace of mind
And neglect mentioning my grandfather openly

6. The fragrant flower of Al-Mukhtar, delight of his eyes
The full moon of masters, leader of all rulers

7. The people grieved for him and missed him
The hissing snake laments him bitterly

8. And the jinn mourn him, and the angels in heaven
And a voice calling from the direction of Medina grew louder

9. And darkness covered the horizons, until
It wept bitterly over the affliction of Hussein my exalted brother

10. And the land stretched with groves due to his absence
And the heavens wept over losing him

11. As if the Guardian of the Prophets grieved
Over him, pouring down tears constantly

12. And the hand of fate spread over the sphere of light
In the horizon, a brocade sail dyed by his blood

13. A misguided group wronged him and scattered his followers
And cast him into the arrows of hostility and tribulation

14. And violated the sanctity of Haydar and Muhammad
By killing the friend of truth before he could reach them

15. And destroyed an Ahmadi pillar whose origin
Is the light that shone in the Most High realm

16. And insulted the messenger’s honorable grandson
The virgin’s eye, but to desire turned willingly

17. An alliance of the evilest gang
Whose crime has no excuse to be accepted

18. You made the messenger of the worlds grieve for his grandson
And thus the pillar of the faith was shaken

19. Evil is the gang who obeyed an unjust man
And disobeyed a revealed command for others’ benefit

20. They raised the banner of the enemy of Muhammad’s Household
So their shame in history books is recorded

21. How many pure and innocent hearts you have saddened
Praying to their Lord, tried and tested

22. And how many eyes whose tears
Watered the continuous story of the Prophet’s sons

23. And when the Master al-Husayn and his Household were wronged
The pages of anguish were written, abridged and detailed

24. Woe to an event whose mention is repeated
In speeches and biographies, never to halt

25. They took away the essence of Islam and its mystries
And made the aching heart refuse to neglect

26. They explained the texts of a tragedy whose sorrows
Have written a long book for the sick

27. And for the sorrow of Karbala’s master they rained
From the clouds of letters hiding behind the highest summits

28. My soul is ransom for his noble soil
For he was slain with great affliction, wrongfully killed

29. Damn his killer, what shamelessness
To disobey our Lord and go astray from what was revealed

30. He forgot the testament in the Book and betrayed it
And persisted in wearing the garb of stubbornness

31. It is as if I see him on the Day of Judgement
As his shameful state is tossed into hell

32. And al-Zahra asking her Lord for her son al-Husayn’s right
With burning anguish that will never fail

33. And God will please her by defeating his enemy
And by aiding her slain grandson if she asks

34. I swear by the martyr’s body parts and household
My life was not sweet after that and no wishes were fulfilled

35. I swear my time will not be pleasant nor my thoughts
Composed except by his ember, by God never

36. And if his mention disappears for a time
Nothing burns with greater pain
