1. We bid farewell to the nights and their darkness,
As their tomorrow, glory and greatness turned to us.

2. Their darkness and light fluctuated within us,
And their misery and comfort passed by us.

3. In both states we saw only so we may witness,
The beauty and vileness of the nights.

4. We struggled with them until one may see,
The virtues and vices of men through them.

5. By God's grace, hardship did not break us,
Nor did the eyes that envied our comfort sleep.

6. Distress did not give us bitter life,
Nor did ease make us constrict it.

7. It is but the soul, if you prevent its queries,
Its hopes will settle and straighten it.

8. Oppose its passions, and if you do not deter it,
It persists upon the path of disgrace and greed belittles it.

9. Indeed, its prime days have passed away,
And the hand of loftiness has touched its base.

10. Foxes have become its orators,
And its generosity has faded, and its noble ones are gone.

11. The abode of judiciousness has become barren ruins,
Where no gentle breeze blows upon its branches.

12. Changing those ascents into others,
Abolishing all but their traces.

13. I wonder, will its companion return,
And the one with the clipped wing come back to its entirety?

14. And after the estrangement, will it approach,
And revive its statute after death erased it?

15. How often did we perceive a mirage as a filled cup,
And set out to it, only to find it a delusion.

16. When unaware, we imagined the mirage was a drink,
And lingered for our souls to slumber.

17. We smelled the lightning of magnanimity, but whenever
Its darkness faded, its flashes would vanish.

18. It stumbled like cloudbursts, and whenever
We thought them rain, their clouds would clear.

19. Winds of success blew, but when
They blew in that direction, their breath was foul.

20. It forced the boughs of resolve, and when
We hoped for gentle breezes, their poison rose.

21. So take your soul far from blaming, for it is
Your life, so prevent any blame that poisons it.

22. And in the wisdom of the noble Shariah, without doubt,
Consider well which pasture you release it.
