1. At the gates of a ship
With a crown above the sea

2. We met when the time was
Before love, after noon

3. I looked but did not stare, yet
She saw me as I passed

4. I rejoiced to avert my eyes
And feign innocence

5. While between her eyes
Kisra shakes off the dust of the grave

6. So my friend smiled at her
Beneath the wings of secrecy

7. But her friend repelled him
With eyes like an eagle's!

8. I left them to their passion
While my heart lingered at her waist

9. I drew near but said nothing
And my restraint meant nothing

10. My unruly tongue eats away at me
How much poetry has it uttered before!

11. As is its habit when I love
It tightens, even at some prose

12. She was truly at a height
Where eagles dare not soar

13. And her defiance, created
With no shelter, at the summit

14. God forbid she has not killed me
But cost me my patience!

15. After bitter hesitation
Her blushing face beckoned me

16. A proud, sorcery-piercing nose
And a bewitching brow

17. I spoke to her, she spoke to me
But I shall not tell you of our chastity

18. We remained a few hours
In which I forgot my noble friend

19. Did she forget her friend?
By God, I have the same excuse

20. Would that our journey lasted,
O love of my life

21. Why is it that when we love
Time passes as quickly as life?

22. We disembarked from our ship
To the bitter shore of parting

23. And bid farewell to the two
Who poured passion into our hearts

24. My friend is distraught and I am
Intoxicated without drink

25. We returned after midnight
With evil inside our good!

26. What misfortune that she showed me
Ease after hardship

27. What misfortune that she made me
Miss the dawn prayer!
