1. O my companion and friend
In my dwelling and journey

2. If you wish for poetry
That blossoms like meadows of flowers

3. Then look to the book of ink

4. In it are precious pearls
Sold for trivial prices

5. Despite their beauty
And precious worth

6. Bringing joy to the scholars
Except the petty envious ones

7. And he who one day aspires
To match the esteemed

8. How could he, when he knows
The Captive surpasses in his verse

9. He has surpassed others
With abundant knowledge

10. So who among us, my friend
In our time can match him?

11. I have been filled with joy
By his enlightened poetry

12. So I said in truth
With sincerity of conscience
