1. Man has no refuge from the ravages of time,
No shelter from its storms can last.
١. لَيسَ لِلمَرءِ عُصرَةٌ مِن وَقَاعِ الدَّ
هرِ تُغني عَنهُ سَنَامُ عَنَاقِ
2. I've seen what happened to people before me,
And all that comes after will also pass.
٢. قَد تَبَيَّنتُ في الخُطُوبِ الَّتي
قَبلي فما بَعدها إلَى اليَومِ باقي
3. I watch the lofty mountain, worn away,
Collapsing under clouds and wind and rain.
٣. وأَرَى الشَّاهِقَ المُدِلَّ بهِ الأَر
وَى دُوَينَ السَّحابِ وَعرَ الَمراقي
4. The proud are humbled, their glories fade,
Fortune betrays them, joy turns to pain.
٤. وَدِلاَلُ العَزيزِ بالَجمعِ ذي الأَر
كانِ كُلاٍّ مَعاذُهُ غَيرُ واقي
5. Fate strips away all we own and love,
Our lives flicker out like guttering flames.
٥. لا يُعرِّي رَيبُ الَمنُونِ ذَوي العَي
شِ ولا مِن حَياتهِ بِرِمَاق
6. Each living soul is guided by the hand
Of one whose eyes are blind to what they see.
٦. كُلُّ حَيٍّ تَقُودُهُ كَفُ هَادٍ
جِنَّ عَينٍ يُغشيهِ ما هُوَ لاقي
