1. Oh how often my friend grew arrogant,
And I overlooked it out of gentleness,
2. Though if I wanted to punish him for it,
I would be well within my rights,
3. But I was pleased that they might know,
My worth, and so I let it pass,
4. Oh ask the young men what they said,
When I stood and confronted them,
5. But my beloved is too dear to me,
So I turned a blind eye.
