1. Truthfulness has passed, as have the truthful, O Saad!
Seek not truthfulness from the people of this age-

2. They have no truthfulness, nor know it.
They have plunged into the morass of villainy and guile.

3. Their souls are ruled by love of fortune and sensual delight.
Say: O Lord, protect me from trials!

4. Where are the Godfearing? Where are the rightly guided?
Where are the learned and the prudent?

5. Where are the men who were exemplars by their deeds and words,
O Saad, in public and in secret?

6. All of them are dead, all of them are gone,
Or have they concealed themselves because of great afflictions?

7. No good remains in this age or its people-
They have abandoned the Quran, knowledge, and the ways of faith.

8. Alas, alas, how much sorrow fills my heart!
How much anguish and sadness are mine!

9. To God I complain of the absence of Muhammad
And of every knowledgeable guardian of the faith.
