1. The eyes overflow with tears like stars,
Why should I not weep for the best that's gone?

2. For my life that has passed and ended,
With deluded hopes and defeated deeds.

3. For the precious days that have withered,
And I became hostage to ill-omened gains.

4. For the flowers of life that have fallen,
In the winds of fancies and false conjectures.

5. For the most noble times I have wasted,
In markets of loss, playing oblivious.

6. For the best hours I have squandered,
In heedlessness and self-neglect.

7. For spending my breaths fruitlessly,
Without worthwhile or obligatory deeds.

8. For the time that has passed I wasted,
Misguided, not in truth or rightly guided.

9. For missed chances I should have seized,
And attained the most honorable goals.

10. For the life that has gone irretrievably,
A season for desires and wishes.

11. For records laden with sins,
Crimes, burdens and so many faults.

12. For so many flaws, sins and slips,
Feared in their consequences.

13. For desires my soul insisted on,
With innate, overwhelming urge.

14. For choosing a lowly, bitter world,
Full of blame and defects.

15. For knowledge without matching deeds,
No benefit in knowledge without proper acts.

16. For deeds without right intention,
Without sincerity or mindful heart.

17. I pray the five prayers with wandering heart,
In valleys of whisperings from all sides.

18. I recite the Holy Quran of my Lord,
With heedless heart, not devout.

19. I remember my Creator absently,
Without constant presence or company.

20. For lengthy hopes that deceived me,
Forgetting death though nearest unseen.

21. I seldom ponder the grave and decay,
Frequent traveler not returning.

22. Of my resurrection, gathering and reckoning,
My book, my scales, and those harsh tribulations.

23. Whose terrors make children's hair turn white,
I neglected until my deep heedlessness,

24. Was as if I knew not those fearful abodes.
I did not abandon Hellfire's path,

25. Nor dread its serpents and scorpions.
I did not strive for Heaven's gardens,

26. Of bliss, honor, and attained wishes.
Of eternal might, dominion, and survival,

27. All the soul desires of every seeker.
And best of all, their Lord's pleasure with them,

28. And their vision of Him without veil.
Alas for our easy, blissful living,

29. Pure, cleansed of all shame.
Alas for us in delusion and heedlessness,

30. From the Highest Assembly and beloved near.
For their resolve, determination,

31. Effort, and rolling up sleeves to climb ranks.
For their virtue, gallantry,

32. Asceticism, detachment and firmness.
For their isolation, wandering

33. In empty valleys and desolate wilds.
For their fasting every month,

34. And retreats with God under the horizons.
For their patience and gratitude realized,

35. Sincerity, loyalty and so many virtues.
For the intimacy and witnessing they attained,

36. And the tastes and drinks they savored.
What agony, sorrow and grief in my heart!

37. What painful, overwhelming regrets!
And how many tears down my cheeks,

38. Poured by clouds of weeping eyes!
Had I wept bloody tears for what eluded me,

39. O reproacher, it would still be little.
How can tears restore the vanished?

40. Alas, who can bring back one gone?
I seek forgiveness from God, Majestic is He,

41. His power in east and west.
To Him my return, my request and refuge,

42. I hope in His endless grace.
I ask Him for success in what remains

43. Of what pleases and satisfies Him, the Best of Goals.
That He gift us with pardon and mercy,

44. Bounty, favor and veiling of faults.
That He take care of us with gentleness and compassion,

45. Protecting us surely from the harm of blamers.
That He take our souls with the best religion,

46. The religion of Islam, best of gifts.
Steadfast to the Quran and Sunna

47. He brought us, over worlds and ranks.
Muhammad the Guide, Giver of Glad Tidings,

48. Our Prophet, vast ocean of virtues.
May God's prayers and peace be upon him

49. And his Household and Companions like stars.
