1. Every day I am in utter amazement,
With a grief that leaves me in sorrow and depression.

2. He left me no gold except what he threw away,
And ill-fortune began its wretched work.

3. Is there anyone loyal or a dear friend to help me,
Or must I repent while playing this losing game?

4. I am afflicted by his afflictions of hardship and torment.
Without him I would have known little distress,

5. And been satisfied with little food and drink.
Since being estranged from my country and exiled,

6. Cursed is he by God and the lice of dogs!
How he has made me stand in disgrace and gloom,

7. Closing a door of desire short of its entrance.
My Lord, he has afflicted me with a crazed fool

8. Whose eyes covet everyone prone in the dust,
Yet is not satisfied with them unless outstretched on their backs.

9. With the kindness of Temim my great misfortune was cured
By the noble prince, wise and resolute,

10. The splendid benefactor, and the sea, deep and boundless,
Who makes no distinction between ancestry and clouds.

11. Through him I stoop to one noble and openhanded,
Raising beyond the youths' hopes the curtains of concealment.

12. Never have I visited him but happily returned,
His memory is sweeter to the soul than that of youth.

13. He is gentler than water and than the nature of wine,
Discreet in opinion and strict in discourse.
