1. I think her love for me was unintentional
For was she ever true to me?

2. A girl who does not tire of tormenting my heart
And gives it no respite from her hurting ways

She who is not faithful in love

4. And yet I love her coyness and standoffishness
From her aloof and proud cheeks

5. Oh what sorrow for a free man who comforts
A wretched brother in his misery

6. For her slave has a rotl weight
While her free man has but an ounce

7. Whoever sends wine, it is a must
Unless your only choice is an aged prostitute from Babylon

8. For here is a noble Shafi'i judge
Great in stature and steadfast Maliki

9. As for me, I do not incline towards her
For traits in her I find ugly and lowly

10. I love her nearness and she loves my closeness
But this cannot be without tribulation

11. And whenever I met her, we met
Disregarding proper modesty

12. And I see no other view but this
So pay no heed to what the folk may say

13. No life but flipping a penis
Or piercing a boy or a girl

14. Although I may say many things
Except disparage a chaste old woman

15. And I fault no one who sees me
With eyes of disdain for my lowly state

16. And he who attains glory, distinction and noble deeds
And refined, virtuous actions

17. His nature matches his character, handsomely so
And you are content with elegance and pride

18. You see him lofty and grand
With the actions of kingly Kisras

19. He has pens that flow as he desires
With the support of fate and divine decree

20. As if the words on the paper are flowers
