1. Your life, what a tremendous calamity,
And its affair, a momentous tragedy,

١. لعمرك إنه رزء عظيم
وخطب أمره جلل جسيم

2. We've been struck with the loss of Allah's prayers upon him,
Not a single night has shone since his demise.

٢. رزئنا من صلاة الله تترى
عليه ما دجا ليل بهيم

3. The mounts did not return to the homestead,
Nor did the stars rise above the land.

٣. وما أطت إلى البيت المطايا
وما طلعت على الأرض النجوم

4. Your life, the affliction is not exclusive,
Rather the affliction is common to all.

٤. لعمرك ما المصاب به خصوص
ولكن المصاب به عموم

5. The meadows were watered with tears that poured,
From eyes that rained like a cloudburst.

٥. سقى جدثاً به حماد أضحى
من الوسمي هطال سجوم

6. In it the glory has passed and noble deeds,
In it the honor and ancient pride.

٦. ففيه المجد أمسى والمعالي
وفيه العز والفخر القديم

7. After his passing one called Hammam,
For affairs or said the generous remained.

٧. أبعد وفاته يدعى همام
لخطب أو يقال بقي كريم

8. As if the day we were deprived of him,
Sorrows had ravaged our souls.

٨. كأنا يوم منعناه إلينا
وقد فتكت بأنفسنا الهموم

9. Their cheeks torn by sorrow through the nights,
Though the journey of time brings lasting gloom.

٩. ثواكل حزنهن على الليالي
وإن قدم المدى حزن مقيم

10. Our spring was in every abode,
When the clouds hoarded their downpour.

١٠. وكان ربيعنا في كل محل
إذا ضنت بوابلها الغيوم

11. Beautiful in action, praiseworthy in character,
His deeds adorned with generosity and eminence.
