يا أيها الرجل المبدي عداوته

1. O you man who shows his enmity
Consider for yourself which command you will obey

١. يا أيُّها الرجُل المبْدي عَدَاوَتَهُ
رَوّ لِنَفْسِكَ أيّ الأمْرِ تَأَتمِرُ

2. Do not think me like the people you have ruled
By force when pretexts flow like excuses

٢. لاَ تَحْسَبَنِّي كَأقْوَامٍ مَلَكْتَهُمُ
طَوْعَ الأعِنَّةِ لَمَّا تَرْشَحُ العُذْرُ كذا

3. And I did not know what resentment you harbored
Until the caravans and tidings brought it to me

٣. وَمَا عَلِمْت بِمَا أضْمَرْتَ منْ حَنَقٍ
حتَّى أَتَتْنِي بِهِ الرُّكْبَانُ والنُّذرُ

4. If you wish for glory over glories
Then extend your hands for the good is to be grasped

٤. فإنْ نَفِسْتَ على الأمجَاد مَجْدَهُمُ
فَابْسُطْ يَدَيْكَ فإنْ الخَيْرَ مُبْتَدَرُ

5. And know that I have the best of a company
Like crescents that no mortal transcends

٥. واعْلَمْ بأنَّ عَلِيَّ الخَيْرِ مِنْ نَفَرٍ
مِثلِ الأهلَّةِ لا يَعْلُوهُمُ بَشَرُ

6. The angry envious one cannot ascend their glory
As long as he remains stoned by its misfortunes

٦. لا يَرْتَقِي الْحَاسِدُ الغَضْبَانُ مَجْدَهُمُ
مَا دَامَ بِالحَزْنِ مِنْ صَمَّائِهَا حَجَرُ

7. Wretched is the youth you are unless between you
Is the difference between the light of sun and moon

٧. بِئْسَ الفَتَى أنْتَ إلاَّ أنَّ بَيْنَكُمَا
كَمَا تَفَاضَل ضَوءُ الشَّمْس والقَمَرُ

8. And I reckon you will not stop
Until touched by its claws of triumph

٨. وَلاَ أخَالُكَ إلاَّ لَسْتَ مُنْتَهِياً
حتَّى يَمَسَّكَ من أظْفَارِهِ ظُفُرُ

9. Do not praise a man until you have tested him
And do not blame one not yet tried by experience

٩. لا تَحْمَدَنَّ امْرَءاً حتَى تُجَرّبَهُ
وَلاَ تَذُمَنَّ مَنْ لَمْ يَبْلُهُ الخَبَرُ

10. Truly I am a man who seldom praises anyone
Until I see some of what he does and some of what he leaves

١٠. إنّي امْرؤٌ قَلَّمَا أُثَنِي عَلَى أحَدٍ
حَتَّى أرَى بَعْضَ مَا يَأتِي وَمَا يَذَرُ

11. When a people's enmity was
In the heart or in their spying eyes

١١. إني إذا مَعْشَرٌ كَانَتْ عَدَاوَتُهُمْ
فِي الصَّدْر أوْ كانَ مِن أبْصَارِهِمْ خَزَرُ

12. I walk the naked plains against people I battle
Until destitution appears before them

١٢. أمْشِي الصوَاءَ لأقْوَامٍ أحاربُهُمْ
حَتَّى إذا ظَهَرَتْ لَدَيْهِمِ الفِقَرُ

13. I gathered the patience of a ode in rhyme
Which will not leave the ages without trace among them

١٣. جمَّعْتُ صَبرْاً جَرَامِيزيِ بِقَافِيَةٍ
لا يَبْرَحُ الدَّهْرَ مِنْهَا فِيهُمُ أثَرُ
