1. Peace like the flowers of meadows exudes
From a dwelling where guidance is taught and imbued
١. سَلاَمٌ كأَزهار الرُّبَى يُتَنَسّمُ
عَلَى مَنزِلٍ منهُ الهُدَى يُتَعَلّمُ
2. At the Egyptians' sanctuary engulfed in gloom
Their faces in it like full moons consumed
٢. عَلى مَصرَعٍ لِلفاطِمِيِّينَ غُيِّبَت
لأوجُهِهِم فِيهِ بُدُورٌ وَأَنجُمُ
3. At the shrine, had you seen the Prophet's kin
You'd have witnessed his limbs severed limb from limb
٣. عَلَى مَشهَدٍ لَو كُنت حَاضِرَ أَهلِهِ
لَعَايَنت أعضَاءَ النَّبِيِّ تُقَسَّمُ
4. At Karbala, neither rain nor drink availed
Only tears and blood that freely flowed and wailed
٤. عَلَى كَربَلا لا أَخلَفَ الغَيثُ كَربَلا
وَإِلا فَإِنَّ الدَّمعَ أندَى وَأكرَمُ
5. The dwellings of Yathrib roared at their fate
Ruins and Zamzam cried at their devastated state
٥. مَصَارِعُ ضجَّت يَثرِبٌ لِمُصَابِهَا
وَنَاحَ عَلَيهِنَّ الحَطِيمُ وَزَمزَمُ
6. Mecca, the Black Stone, the Maqam and Safa
The Station of the Ruins and Zamzam, voices of woe
٦. وَمَكَّةُ وَالأَستَارُ والرُّكنُ والصَّفَا
وَمَوقِفُ جَمع الحَطِيم وَزَمزَمُ
7. The Black Stone a symbol of utter remorse
Can't you see how dark and battered it is, of course?
٧. وَبِالحَجَرِ المَلثُومِ عُنوَانُ حَسرَةٍ
أَلستَ تَرَاهُ وَهوَ أَسوَدُ أَسحَمُ
8. The garden of our Master Muhammad now bereft
Since they were gone, only sorrow that day was left
٨. وَرَوضَةُ مَولانَا النَّبِيّ مُحَمَّدٍ
تَبَدَّى عَلَيهَا الثُّكلُ يَومَ تُخُرّمُ
9. His lofty pulpit and palm trunk cry their fill
With hearts that understand their lament shrill
٩. وَمِنبره العُلوي وَالجِدعُ أَعوَلا
عَلَيهِم عَوِيلاً بِالضَّمَائِرِ يُفهَمُ
10. If those inanimate objects could feel their pain
Stones would have wailed and birds fallen in vain
١٠. وَلَو قَدرت تِلكَ الجَمَادَات قدرهم
لَدُكَّ حِرَاءٌ وَاستُطِيرَ يلَملَمُ
11. No limit to the sorrow of the land and its people
For the Prophet's family, a tragedy ample
١١. وَمَا قَدرُ مَا تَبكِي البلادُ وَأهلُهَا
لآلِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ وَالرُّزءُ أَعظَمُ
12. If the Prophet alive when they were killed
Ibn Ziyad's mother her womb would have sealed
١٢. لَوَ انَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ يَحيَى بُعَيدَهُم
رَأى ابنُ زِيَادٍ أمّه كَيفَ تَعقمُ
13. Zahra came, blessings on her soul pure
Calling to her father as tears she did pour
١٣. وَأَقبَلَتِ الزَّهراءُ قُدسَ تُربُهَا
تُنَادِي أَبَاهَا وَالمَدَامِعَ تَسجُمُ
14. She said: My father, my son they took as spoils
Molded by Qayn, destiny's changing coils
١٤. تَقُولُ أَبِي هُم غَادَرُوا ابنَيَّ نُهبَةً
لِمَا صَاغَهُ قَينٌ وَمَا مَجَّ أرقَمُ
15. To Hassan poison in a deadly cup they gave
No mercy, no qualms, no remorse they craved
١٥. سَقَوا حسناً بِالسُّمِّ كَأساً رَوِيَّةً
وَلَم يَقرَعُوا سِنّاً وَلَم يَتَنَدَّموا
16. Cut off Husayn's head they did in Karbala
As if they had done what is virtuous and proper
١٦. وَهُم قَطَعُوا رَأسَ الحُسَينِ بِكَربَلا
كَأَنَّهُمُ قَد أَحسَنُوا حِينَ أُجرِمُ
17. Take my revenge, bring peace to my heart and eyes
That overflow with tears and agonizing cries
١٧. فَخُذ مِنهُمُ ثَارِي وَسَكِّن جَوَانِحاً
وَأجفَانَ عَينٍ تَستَطِيرُ وَتَسجُمُ
18. My father, avenge the grandson, recall his plight
His anguish as his blood colored waters bright
١٨. أَبِي وَانتَصِر لِلسِّبطِ وَاذكُر مُصَابَهُ
وَغُلَّتَهُ والنَّهرُ رَيَّانُ مُفعَمُ
19. His kin imprisoned after him, their sacrifice
Like the Sassanids' breed, all looted as price
١٩. وَأَسْرَ بَنِيهِ بَعدَهُ وَاحتِمَالَهُم
كَأنَّهُمُ مِن نسلِ كِسرَى تُغُنَّمُ
20. Yazid's spite bore into the lips that did kiss
Yours, O Light, now gone into dark abyss
٢٠. وَنَقرَ يَزيدٍ في الثَّنَايَا التي اغتَدَت
ثَنَايَاكَ فِيهَا أَيُّهَا النُّورُ تَلثِمُ
21. Thus the truthful one was right, heralds of doom
Nothing left by the Farouk except empty room
٢١. إِذَن صَدَقَ الصِّدِّيقُ حَملَةَ مُقدِمٍ
وَمَا فَارَقَ الفَارُوقَ مَاضٍ وَلَهذَمُ
22. On them Othman the wrath of Hurrah's son brought
While Ali exalted raised high what they wrought
٢٢. وَعَاثَ بِهِم عُثمَانُ عَيثَ ابنِ حُرَّةٍ
وَأَعلَى عَليٌّ كَعبَ مَن كَانَ يُهضَمُ
23. For them Jibreel called the prayer at nightfall
Veiled by darkness like a thief, no shine at all
٢٣. وَجَبّ لَهُم جِبرِيلُ أَتمَكَ غَارِبٍ
مِنَ الغَيّ لا يُعلَى وَلا يُتَسَنّمُ
24. But it is the will of my Lord that's come to pass
No change can repeal what He has brought to amass
٢٤. وَلَكِنَّهَا أَقدَارُ رَبي بِهَا قَضَى
فَلا يَتَخَطَّى النَّقضُ مَا هُوَ يُبرِمُ
25. Allah willed that on them their slaves would prevail
So those slaves may suffer in torment and flail
٢٥. قَضَى اللَّهُ أَن يَقضِي عَلَيهِم عَبِيدهم
لِتَشقَى بِهِم تِلكَ العَبِيدُ وَتُنقَمُ
26. Those people failed, their efforts came to naught
Their abode is Hell, that's the justice they sought
٢٦. هُمُ القَومُ أَمَّا سَعيُهُم فَمُخَيَّبٌ
مضَاعٌ وَأَمَّا دَارُهُم فَجَهَنَّمُ
27. You who were fooled, Allah's wrath on you weighs
What will you say to the Prophet's daughter and your deeds?
٢٧. فَيَا أَيُّهَا المَغرُورُ وَاللَّهُ غَاضِبٌ
لِبنتِ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أَينَ تُيَمِّمُ
28. Oh what sorrow and grief to relate and imbue
What tears flow, what burning hearts crack in two
٢٨. أَلا طَرَبٌ يُقلَى أَلا حُزن يُصطَفَى
أَلا أَدمُعٌ تُجرَى أَلا قَلبٌ يُضرَمُ
29. Help us with tears, though they trivial may seem
For Husayn, they are fitting and utterly beseem
٢٩. قِفُوا سَاعِدُونَا بِالدُّمُوعِ فَإِنَّهَا
لَتَصغُرُ فِي حَقِّ الحُسَينِ وَيَعظُمُ
30. However many elegies of Husayn you hear
That express only sorrow and make meaning clear
٣٠. وَمَهمَا سَمِعتُم فِي الحُسَينِ مَرَاثِياً
تُعَبِّرُ عَن مَحضِ الأَسَى وَتُتَرجِمُ
31. Stretch out your palms, pray that blessings may flow
On Husayn's grandfather, blessings we owe
٣١. فَمُدُّوا أَكُفَّ المُسعدينَ بِدَعوَةٍ
وَصَلُّوا عَلَى جَدِّ الحُسَينِ وَسَلَّمُ
