1. This sacred place, so pause now at its doors
Swaying in rapture for joining its throng
١. هَذَا العَقِيقُ فَقِفْ عَلَى أَبْوابِهِ
مُتَمايِلاً طَرَباً لِوَصْلِ عِرَابهِ
2. O how long you roamed each distant camp
Dusty, seeking to meet its lords
٢. يا طَالَ ما قَدْ جُبْتَ كُلَّ تنُوفَةٍ
مُغْبَرَّةٍ تَرْجُو لِقَا أَرْبابِهِ
3. You traversed the miles, crying out
Your quest for good and asking for guidance
٣. فَقَطَعْتَ أَنْساعَ الرَّواحِلِ مُعْلِناً
في كُلِّ خَيْرٍ جِئْتَهُ بِطِلابِهِ
4. Until tears streamed down your cheeks
Flowing on this plain from their downpour
٤. حَتَّى غَدَتْ غُدْرانُ دَمْعِكَ فُيَّضاً
بالسَّفْحِ فِي ذا السَّفْحِ مِنْ تَسْكَابِهِ
5. A life, though so precious when given
Spent seeking these abodes and their roads
٥. والعُمْرُ وَهُوَ أَجَلُّ ما خُوِّلْتَهُ
أَنْفَقْتَه في الدّورِ في أَدْرابِهِ
6. Disobeying those who dissuaded
Deaf you remained to their words of caution
٦. وعَصَيْتَ فيهِ قَوْلَ كُلِّ مُفَنِّدٍ
وَسَدَدْتَ سَمْعاً عَنْ سَماعِ خِطابِهِ
7. Good tidings to me, though pariah am I
With arduous passion my easy desire
٧. بُشْرايَ بَعْدَ النّاسِ وَهْوَ حَظِيَّةٌ
بِتَبَدُّلي سَهْلَ الهَوَى بِصِعابِهِ
8. God granted what I so wished and worked for
And struggled to grasp its essence and core
٨. قَدْ أَنْجَحَ اللهُ الذي أَمَّلْتُهُ
وكَدَحْتُ فِيهِ لنَيْلِ لُبِّ لُبَابِهِ
9. I relinquished my games and met troubles instead
And tribulations from its demands
٩. وهَجَرْتُ فيهِ مَلاعِبي ولَقِيتُ في
هِ مَتَاعِبي ومُنيتُ مِنْ أَوْصابِهِ
10. I drank the cups of parting, so bitter made
Mixed as they were with discord and sorrow
١٠. وشَرِبْتُ كاساتِ الفِراقِ وقَدْ غَدَتْ
مَمْزُوجَةً بِزُعافِهِ وبِصابِهِ
11. I gave to its guides gifts so dear to me
And granted them the best of what I could give
١١. وبَذَلْتُ لِلْهَادِين إِلَّيْهِ نَفائِسي
ومَنَحْتُهُ مِنّي مِلاءَ وِطابِهِ
12. So I pitched my tent amid devotees
And settled it into their valleys to live
١٢. فَحَطَطْتُ رَحْلي بَيْنَ سُكّانِ الحِمَى
وأَنْخْتُهُ في مُخْصِباتِ شِعابِهِ
13. I quenched my soul, so long suffering
Crossing the wastes of its plains and its hills
١٣. وشَفَيْتُ نَفْسِي بَعْدَ طُولِ عَنائِها
في قَطْعِ حَزْنِ فَلاتِهِ وهِضابِهِ
14. From my neck I removed the staff of roaming
No more fearing the shame of goodbyes
١٤. وَوَضَعْتُ عَنْ عُنُقِي عَصَا التَّرْحالِ لا
أَخْشَى العَذُولَ ولا قَبيحَ عِتابِهِ
15. I, though no boast, am its lands' best scout
Its lofty crags are known well to me
١٥. فأَنا وَلا فَخْرُ الخَبِيرُ بِأَرْضِهِ
وأَنا العَرُوفُ بِشَامِخَاتِ عُقَابِهِ
16. I know all its trees and the fields about
I can tell what its signs truly mean
١٦. وأَنا العَلِيمُ بِكُلِّ ما في سُوحِهِ
وأَنا الْمُتَرْجِمُ عَنْ خَفِيِّ جَوابِهِ
17. O you Prophet's son, knowing the seen and unseen
None knows better than you what I speak
١٧. يابْنَ الرَّسُولِ وعالِمَ الْمَعْقُولِ وال
مَنْقولِ أَنْتَ بِمِثْلِ ذا أدْرَى بِهِ
18. Ask not about this shrine, for before you
Its rebellion was tamed and bowed to its peak
١٨. لا تَسْأَلْنَّ عَنِ العَقِيقِ فإِنَّها
قَدْ ذُلِّلَتْ لَكَ جَامِحَاتُ رِكابِهِ
19. For a time you drank from its springs
Tasting the sweetest its wardens could give
١٩. وكَرَعْتَ في تِلْكَ المناهِلِ بُرْهَةً
وشَرِبْتَ صَفْوَ الوِرْدِ من أَرْبابِهِ
20. In its gardens you rested, so blithe and serene
Smiling, delighted by all you perceive
٢٠. وقَعَدْتَ في عَرْصاتِهِ مُتَمايلاً
مُتَبَسِّماً نَشْوانَ مِنْ إطْرابِهِ
21. Submit then - you can solve any trouble or puzzle
That perplexed all the world and hid its true face
٢١. واسْلَمْ ودُمْ أَنْتَ الْمُعَدُّ لِمُعْضِلٍ
أَعْيَى الوَرَى يَوْماً بكَشْفِ نِقابِهِ
22. Take my words - no misguidance they cradle
No bias spurred me to swerve from truth's grace
٢٢. وَخُذِ الجَواب فَما بِهِ خَطَلٌ وَلا
عَصَبِيَّةٌ قَدَحَتْ بِغَيْرِ صَوَابِهِ
23. It has two kinds of people, one kind that has shed
All but love for their Lord and their brothers beside
٢٣. سُكّانُهُ صِنْفانِ صِنْفٌ قَدْ غَدَا
متجرداً للحب بني صحابه
24. No more tugged by the world and its comforts and bread
For their needs and their drinks they no longer strive
٢٤. قَدْ طَلَّقَ الدُّنيا فَلَيْسَ بِضَارِعٍ
يَوْماً لِنَيْلِ طَعَامِهِ وشَرابِهِ
25. They walk the path of the rightly led
Leaving matters to God, straight and with pride
٢٥. يَمْشي عَلَى سَنَنِ الهُداء مُفَوِّضاً
لِلأَمْرِ لا يَلْوي لِلَمْعِ سَرَابِهِ
26. Content with whatever God sends for their needs
No distress when the world spurns them aside
٢٦. يَرْضَى بِمَيْسُورٍ منَ الدُّنيا وَلاَ
يَغْتَمُّ عِنْدَ نِفارِهَا عَنْ بَابِهِ
27. Belittling it, sure of its fading allure
And the nearness of its pleasures' demise
٢٧. مُتَقَلِّلاً مِنْها تَقَلُّلَ مُوقِنٍ
بِدُرُوسِ رَوْنَقِها وقُرْبِ ذهَابِهِ
28. Shunning its transient and futile lure
Seeking lasting rewards in the heavens on high
٢٨. مُتَزَهِّداً فيما يَزُولُ مُزايلاً
إدْراكَ ما يُبْقي عَظِيمَ ثَوابِهِ
29. Their creed is the love of their Lord alone
Reining in wayward passions that lead men awry
٢٩. جَعَل الشِّعارَ لَهُ مَحَبَّةَ رَبِّهِ
وثَنَى عِنانَ الحُبِّ عَنْ أَحْبابِهِ
30. With such fine comrades, this place is now graced
For this breed, let affection be tied
٣٠. أكْرِمْ بهَذا الصَّحْبِ مِنْ سُكّانِهِ
أَحْبِبْ بهَذَا الجِنْسِ مِنْ أحْزانِهِ
31. They attained the sole goal that gives meaning true
The heart of faith leaving no doubts inside
٣١. فَهُمُ الذينَ أَصابَوُا الغَرضَ الذي
هُوَ لا مِرا في الدِّينِ لُبُّ لُبابِهِ
32. Many walked as companions this road
In the steps of Mohammed, blessed guide
٣٢. وَلَكَمْ مَشى هَذِي الطَّريقَةَ صاحِبٌ
لِمُحَمَّدٍ فَمَشَوْا عَلَى أَعْقَابِهِ
33. Among them Giffari brought rest to his ride
And Qarnee raced ahead by its side
٣٣. فيها الغِفارِي قَدْ أَناخَ مَطيَّهُ
ومَشى بِهَا القَرْني بسَبْقِ رِكابِهِ
34. Fuzeil and Junaid both reveling drank
From passion's cup, craving its surge and its tide
٣٤. وَبِها فُضَيْلٌ والجُنَيْدُ تَجَاذَبا
كَاسَ الهَوَى وتَعَلّلا بِرُضابِهِ
35. Bishr likewise and Adham quickened the pace
As did Kayena'i striding beside
٣٥. وكَذاكَ بِشْرٌ وابْنُ أَدْهَمَ أَسْرَعا
مَشْياً بِهِ والكَيْنَعيُّ مَشى بِهِ
36. As for those who rejected its wisdom and grace
Drunkenly sharing the wine of their pride
٣٦. أَمّا الذينَ غَدَوْا عَلَى أدْبارِهِمْ
يَتَجاذَبُونَ الخَمْرَ في أكْوابِهِ
37. Deeming violation of rights wholly allowed
Believing most worthy themselves to decide
٣٧. ويَرَوْنَ حَقَّ الغَيْرِ غَيْرَ مُحَرَّمٍ
بَلْ يَزْعُمونَ بأَنَّهُمْ أَوْلَى بِهِ
38. Hallaj blazed their trail of misguidance and fraud
And Muhaiyddeen strayed from the path far and wide
٣٨. قَدْ أَنْهَجَ الحَلاجُ طُرْقَ ضَلالِهِمْ
وكَذاكَ مُحْيي الدّينِ لا حَيّا بِهِ
39. Cursed ibn Sab'een in his ignorance trod
Deluded, drunken in folly and lies
٣٩. وكَذَا ابنُ سَبْعينَ الْمَهينُ فَقَدْ غَدا
مُتَطَوِّراً في جَهْلِهِ ولَعابِهِ
40. And Jilani spurred on his steed down that road
Then Sa'eed pursued it and so testified
٤٠. وكذلِكَ الجِيلي أَجالَ جَوَادَهُ
في ذلك الميْدَانِ ثمَّ سَعَى بِهِ
41. And Tilmisani proclaimed all is allowed
Take and enjoy it, no more need be tried
٤١. والتِّلْمِساني قَالَ قَدْ حَلَّتْ لَهُ
كُلُّ الفُروجِ فَخُذْ بِذا وكَفى بِهِ
42. If what the Imams related holds true
Then theirs is blasphemy, faith they denied
٤٢. إِنْ صَحَّ ما نَقَلَ الأَئِمَّةُ عَنْهُمُ
فالكفْرُ ضَرْبَةُ لازب بِصحابِهِ
43. To call them infidels, we are thus bound
Though the vilest of men would approve of their side
٤٣. قَدْ أَلْزَمُونا أَنْ نَدينَ بِكُفْرِهِمْ
ويَكُونُ شَرَّ الخَلْقِ مَنْ يَرْضَى بِهِ
44. They made clear that what they intended is found
In our words, as we stated before in this ode
٤٤. قَدْ صَرَّحوا أنّ الذي يَبْغُونَهُ
هُوَ ظاهِرُ الأَمْرِ الّذي قُلْنا بِهِ
45. They toyed with religion, conspiring to hound
And raze its foundations in quest of their code
٤٥. فهم الذين تلاعبوا بني الورى
بالدين وانتدبوا لقصد خرابه
46. Instead of the One, multitudes they espoused
Approving innovation and musical mode
٤٦. ولِوَحْدَةٍ جَعَلُوا المثَاني مُؤْنِسا
واللَّحْنَ عِنْدَ الذّكْرِ منْ إعْرابِهِ
47. Their jurist enjoined their misguidance aroused
Inviting to error, this path he bestrode
٤٧. وكَذاكَ فارٍضُهُمْ بما يَأتي بِهِ
فَرَضَ الضَّلالَ عَلَيْهِمُ وَدَعا بِهِ
48. He craved prophethood, mindless of marring its crown
Dooming himself by provoking God's rod
٤٨. رامَ النُّبُوَّةَ لا لَعاً لِعِثارِهِ
رَوْمَ الذُّباب مَصِيرَهُ لِعقابِهِ
49. A human in name, but apostate in town
No doubter in him, deep immersed in its tide
٤٩. إنْسانُهُ إِنْسانُ عَيْنِ الكُفْرِ لاَ
يَرْتابُ فيهِ سابِحٌ بعُبابِهِ
50. They brayed their unison, sermoning down
From pulpits, then uttered the falsest of lies
٥٠. نَهَقُوا بوَحْدَتِهمْ عَلَى رُوسِ الملا
ومِنَ الْمَقَالِ أَتَوْا بِعَيْنِ كِذابِهِ
51. No infidelity equals on earth, writ or bound
Such words, if sincerely held and applied
٥١. لا كُفْرَ في الدُّنْيا عَلَى كُلِّ الوَرى
إنْ كانَ هَذا القوْلُ دُونَ نِصابِهِ
52. So end such conjecture, be not one to dress
A carcass in robes, keeping rot inside
٥٢. فَدَعِ التَّعَسُّفَ في التَّأَوُّلِ لا تَكُنْ
كفَتىً يُغَطِّي جيفَةً بِثِيابِهِ
53. These omens of woe, clues enough to express
Their creed can be found in verses implied
٥٣. هَذَا فُتُوحُ الشُّؤْمِ وهي شَوَاهِدٌ
أنَّ الْمُرادَ لَهُ نُصُوصُ كتابِهِ
