1. A system, O son of affection or illusion
Organized with the wires of questioning

١. نِظَامٌ يا ابْنَ وُدّي أَمْ لآلِي
مُنَظَّمَةٌ بأسْلاَكِ السَّؤالِ

2. You say, when the prisoner desires a journey
To the quarter of perfection with perfection

٢. تَقُولُ إذَا الأَسيرُ أَرادَ سَيْراً
إلى رَبْعِ الْكَمالِ مَعَ الْكَمالِ

3. And intends to be religious with what
The texts of the Book of the Owner of Majesty contain

٣. ورَامَ بأنْ يَدينَ بِما حَوَتْهُ
نُصُوصُ كِتابِ رَبيِّ ذِي الْجَلالِ

4. And what is in the traditions of the Pure Chaste one
A series with the chains of narration of men

٤. وَما في سُنّةٍ للطُّهُرِ طَهَ
مُسَلْسَلةٍ بأسْنادِ الرّجالِ

5. Is there other than the proofs a way
For one who intends arrival to the union

٥. فَهَلْ غَيْرُ الأَدِلّةِ منْ سَبِيلٍ
لِمَنْ رامَ الْوُصولَ إلى الْوِصالِ

6. And is the best of generations and who comes after
Ever strived one day to saying and speaking

٦. وَهَلْ خَيْرُ الْقُرونِ ومَنْ يَليهِ
سَعَوْا يَوْماً إلى قِيلٍ وقالِ

7. So tell me which individual among them
Has worn the dress of affiliation and impersonation

٧. فَقُلْ لِي أَيُّ فَرْدٍ مِنْهُمُ قَدْ
تَلَبّسَ بانْتسابٍ وانْتِحالِ

8. For they did not know schools of thought in travels
Nor accompanied them one day in setting forth

٨. فَمَا عَرَفُوا التَّمَذْهُبَ في رِحالٍ
وَلا صَحِبُوهُ يَوْماً في ارْتِحالِ

9. With Islam and faith they summoned one another
And prevented contention or debate

٩. بإسْلامٍ وإيمانٍ تَدَاعَوْا
وَصَدّوا عَنْ مِراءٍ أو جِدالِ

10. And whoever's hands fell short of efforts
Strove towards the great ones for questioning

١٠. وَمَنْ قَصُرَتْ يَداهُ عَنْ مَساعٍ
سَعَى نَحْوَ الأكابِرِ للسُّؤالِ

11. So he drinks from the spring of the text until
He says, indeed I have narrated with what he narrated to me

١١. فَيَشْرَبُ مِنْ مَعينِ النَّصِّ حَتّى
يقُولَ لَقَدْ رَويتُ بما رَوَى لِي

12. And no person was attributed to the questioned one
Nor did this occur to them in mind

١٢. ولم يُنْسَبْ إلى الْمَسْؤولِ شَخْصٌ
ولمْ يَخْطُرْ لَهُمْ هَذَا ببالِ

13. If the way of people does not avail you
They are the best of generations without debate

١٣. إذَا ما لَمْ يَسَعْكَ سَبيلُ قَوْمٍ
هُمُ خَيْرُ الْقُرونِ بلا جِدالِ

14. So the earth has narrowed, folded up for you
And you have rebutted the truth with imagination

١٤. فَقَدْ ضاقتْ عَليْكَ الأَرْضُ طُرّاً
ودافَعْتَ الْحَقِقَةَ بالخَيالِ

15. Whoever knows, indeed for him is a counterpart
From the noble companions without equal

١٥. فَمَنْ يَعْلَمْ فإنَّ لَهُ مَثِيلاً
مِنَ الصَّحْبِ الْكِرامِ بلا مِثالِ

16. And whoever is ignorant, indeed for him is a peer
From the companions who clung to questioning

١٦. ومَنْ يَجْهَلْ فإنَّ لَهُ نَظِيراً
مِنَ الأَصْحابِ لاَذُوا بالسُّؤالِ

17. For they were of two groups, a group
Exalted, adorned with majesty

١٧. فَقَدْ كانُوا عَلَى قِسْمَيْنِ قِسْمٍ
مُجَلٍّ قَدْ تَحلَّى بالجلالِ

18. And a group that had no share in knowledge
And had shares in fighting

١٨. وقِسْمٍ ما لَهُ في الْعِلْمِ حَظٌّ
وكانَ لَهُ حُظُوظٌ في النِّزالِ

19. Both groups tread a path
And did not follow the imitation of men

١٩. كِلاَ الْقِسْمَيْنِ قَدْ سَلَكوا طَرِيقاً
وَمَا دَانُوا بِتَقْلِيدِ الرّجالِ

20. And no man among them was attributed to Bakr
Or Umar over the passage of nights

٢٠. وَما نُسِب امْرُؤٌ مِنْهُمْ لِبَكْرٍ
ولا عُمَرٍ عَلَى مَرِّ اللّيالي

21. So this scholar narrates to that one
And that deficient one preserves the questioning

٢١. فَهَذا عَالِمٌ يَرْوي لِهَذَا
وَهَذا قَاصِرٌ يُحْفِي السُّؤَالِ

22. And you, O eminent scholar
It is true you incline towards the lofty

٢٢. وإِنَّكَ أَيها الْحَبْرُ الْمُفَدَّى
حَقيقٌ أَنْ تَميلَ إلَى الْمَعالي

23. Thus your father, he being excellent in what
He composes of the marvels of speech

٢٣. كَذَاكَ أَبُوكَ وَهُوَ الْفَذُّ فيما
يُحَبِّرُ منْ بَدِيعاتِ الْمَقالِ

24. So be followers of every authentic text
And shun every imagination

٢٤. فَكُونَا تابِعَيْنِ لِكُلِّ نَصٍّ
صَحِيحٍ واشْرُدا عَنْ كُلِّ خَالِ

25. And do not dread the multitude of a people
So whoever finds evidence, then what does he care

٢٥. ولا تَتْهَيّبا جُمْهُورَ قَوْمٍ
فَمَنْ وَجَدَ الدّلِيلَ فَما يُبالي

26. And compare in the chests those of exaltation
To you from the exaltation of the Owner of Majesty

٢٦. وقِيسوا في الصُّدورِ ذوي جَلالٍ
لَدَيْكُمْ منْ جَلاَلةِ ذي الْجَلالِ

27. When someone says, God said, a person
Bows down before the One Who Bears mountains

٢٧. إذا ما قَالَ قال اللهُ شَخْصٌ
تطأطأ عِنْد ذا شُمُّ الْجِبالِ

28. And if the Messenger says, he says this
Then the sayings of men have fallen

٢٨. وإنْ قَال الرّسولُ يَقُول هَذا
فَقَدْ طاحَتْ أَقاويلُ الرّجالِ

29. And whoever finds the truth and it is truth
Then clinging to imagination is invalidated

٢٩. وَمَنْ وَجَدَ الْحَقِيقَةَ وَهْيَ حَقٌّ
فَقَدْ بَطَلَ التَّمَسُّكُ بالخَيالِ

30. And whoever desires debate, then destruction
For you are the times of debate

٣٠. ومَنْ رامَ الْجدالَ فَقَدْ تَوَلَّتْ
لَكَ الْوَيْلاتُ أَوْقاتُ الْجِدالِ

31. And if the hateful one says without restraint
So-and-so among you is more knowledgeable in speech

٣١. وإنْ قَال الْبَغِيضُ بِلا احْتِشامٍ
فُلانٌ مِنْكَ أَعْرَفُ بالْمَقالِ

32. Then the hidden thing is exposed, so do not respond to him
For ignorance is like the incurable disease

٣٢. فَقَدْ بَرحَ الْخَفاءُ فلا تُجِبْهُ
فإنَّ الْجَهْلَ كالدّاءِ الْعُضالِ

33. As for one who goes on to negate juristic reasoning
And does not feel ashamed of saying the absurd

٣٣. وأَمّا مَنْ غَدا يَنْفي اجْتِهاداً
وَلَمْ يَسْتَحْيِ منْ قَوْلِ الْمُحالِ

34. Say, do you know which text
Came to specifically rule out perfection

٣٤. فَقُلْ لادرٌ دَرّكَ أيُّ نَصٍّ
أَتَى يَقْضِي بِتَخْصِيصِ الْكَمالِ

35. And did the God single out with His grace one
Who is counted ahead without a successor

٣٥. وهَلْ خَصَّ الإلَهُ بفَضْلِهِ مَنْ
يُعَدُّ مُقَدّماً مِنْ دُونِ تَالي

36. A saying no gallant person said
Who fell short in the battle of contention

٣٦. مَقَالٌ لم يَقُلْهُ غيرُ فَدْمٍ
تَقَاعَسَ عِنْدَ مُعْتَرَكِ النِّزالِ

37. A saying God protected a people from
Noble ones who clasped the hand of loftiness

٣٧. مَقَالٌ صانَ عَنْهُ اللهُ قَوْماً
كِراماً صَافحُوا كَفَّ المعالي

38. By your life, after the six is a people
They are the heroes of the arena of debate

٣٨. لَعَمْرُكَ إنَّ بَعْدَ السِّتِّ قَوْماً
هُمُ أَبْطالُ مُعْتَرَكِ الْجِدالِ

39. By your life, after the six a generation
Venerates the one who makes particular over the glorified

٣٩. لَعَمْرُك إنّ بَعْدَ السِّتِّ جِيلاً
يجل عَلَى الْمَخصّصِ بالجَلالِ

40. And you said in doctrinal matters satisfaction is not
Given to their imitation or binding reason

٤٠. وقُلْتَ وفي الْعَقائِدِ لَيْسَ يُرْضَى
لَهَا التَّقْلِيدُ أَوْ رَبْطُ الْعِقالِ

41. That falls under the generality
Which is prohibiting broadly in speech

٤١. فَتِلْكَ لها انْدِراجٌ في عُمُومٍ
هُوَ الْمَنْعُ المعَمَّمْ في الْمَقالِ

42. And the report of penal laws is not a true narrative
But counted among saying and speaking

٤٢. وما خَبَرُ الْحُدودِ حَدِيثُ صِدْقٍ
وَلكِنْ عُدَّ في قِيل وَقَال

43. To al-Basri it is attributed by people
And Mansur ibn Zadhan exaggerates

٤٣. إلَى الْبَصْريِّ يَنْسُبُه أَناسٌ
ومَنْصُورُ بنُ زَاذانٍ يُغالي

44. And our Lord's Friday was legislated for ease
And was not legislated restricted to a ruler

٤٤. وجُمْعَةُ رَبِّنا شُرِعَتْ ليُسْرٍ
ولم تُشْرَعْ مُقَيَّدَةً بِوالي

45. Blood in the path of truth you eschew
And tread it over the passage of nights

٤٥. ودُمْ في نَهْجِ حَقٍّ تَنْتَحِيهِ
وتَسْلُكُهُ عَلَى مَرِّ اللّيالي
