١. أَنا مسكين لمن يعرفُني
لوني السمرةُ أَلوان العرب
2. He who saw a gazelle with pearls upon it
Ruddy-cheeked, coupled with a young mountain goat
٢. من رأَى ظبياً عليه لؤلؤ
واضح الخدين مقروناً بضب
3. Would blame the white paper that gave it fatherhood
Though indeed it was, nor falsely was it called, a father
٣. أَكسبته الورق البيض أَباً
وَلَقَد كان وما يُدعى لأب
4. Keep the company of good men and long for them
Many a man by keeping his company is like a mangy camel
٤. اصحبِ الأَخيار وارغب فيهم
ربَّ من صحبته مثلُ الجرب
5. And speak the truth when you talk to people
And leave lies to him who wants to lie
٥. واصدِق الناس إِذا حدثتهم
ودعِ الكذب لمن شاء كذب
6. Many a bony fellow has a fat house
And the fat house belongs to a worthless family
٦. رُبَّ مهزولٍ سمين بيته
وسمين البيت مهزول النسب
7. My darling has got sickly and fevered
With her yelling or just being noisy
٧. أَصبحت عاذلتي معتلة
قرماً أَم هي وحمى للصخب
8. She's begun spitting in the fat of millet
And reckons blaming to be a raging, plundering fever
٨. أَصبحت تتفل في شحمِ الذُرى
وَتَظُنُّ اللومَ درّاً ينتهب
9. Don't blame her, she is but a woman
Whose salt is on her camel's hump
٩. لا تلمها إِنَّها من نسوة
ملحها موضوعة فوق الركب
10. She makes trouble like a mare
Whenever she is told "Hi" or "Ho"
١٠. كَشموس الخيل يبدو شغبها
كُلما قيل لها هال وهب
