1. When fate makes me laugh, I do not boast,
Nor am I downcast at fate's blows.

2. I do not protect my honor with wealth,
Rather I guard my honor and it protects me.

3. I show kindness in hardship, and act with grace,
No good comes from one who lacks grace in distress.

4. I am shy when impoverished,
That my friends and brothers know my poverty.

5. I cut off my brothers though our bond is still new,
Out of shyness, turning away, though I have no arrogance.

6. If it is shameful what I have done, perhaps
A man comes upon misfortune when least aware.

7. When impoverished, one knows his true friend,
He who has shame will not lack fate's trials.

8. If hard times commit me to you,
Imprisoned by loyalty, in service and provision.
