1. Learn that friends are but three,
Though for each comrade hail with glee.

3. staunchest found o'er all the earth,
In weal or woe, in want or worth.

4. Next comes the friend of Revelry,
Whose fleeting smiles with wine agree.

5. But firm the friend in time of need,
When foods are far and hunger's mead.

6. At times with love he comes to you,
At times estranged, as friends may do.

7. Requite him as the occasion asks,
But shun when danger hovers round.

To bask in fair, to fly distress.
