1. You punished me with indifference, which was hard on me
And prolonged my estrangement, which was strange of you

2. You promised me you wouldn't be indifferent, even if
I intentionally committed sins against you

3. Yet your promise had its rope severed
Between us, and I became the one who angers

4. Far be it from you to break promises, but
The son of Adam imagines he is mistaken and correct

5. Grant me what you claimed you intended
To disobey God, and after that, repent

6. My passionate plea was rejected, and one like me should not
Fast excessively out of self-reproach

7. I went along with what you claimed, since it was not
Good for someone like me to lie to you

8. Return to affection and overlook, out of graciousness
What transpired, for dwelling on it is unseemly

9. Will you allow me solace and your good companionship
With a tongue of honesty in private it is recorded

10. God knows I long
For forgiveness, which is near for the generous

11. Why not reconcile despite the hostility
Reconciliation is best, will you respond?

12. How long will you neglect my request for
Forgiveness I hope for, perhaps you will relent

13. Why not, when it is you who should first
Demand your rights, while I am the crucified

14. Behold, I have come humbly to your door
Judge me, though I am the defeated

15. Think me not insincere in affection
Sometimes appearing, sometimes hidden

16. Affection is intrinsic in me, so it does not
Perceive in it the creeping of time’s events

17. For man has no choice or control in anything
And souls are of different stripes

18. This is the nature of one whose affection you spurned
And severity appeared on your face to him

19. You emptied my heart of affection, so after intimacy
That estrangement pained me

20. You were the heir to my promise, but you discarded me
So I am the dispossessed heir

21. Verily, iron, for all the hardness of its body
Is softened and bent by electricity

22. Far be it for your heart to be hardened
With severity, while reproaches watch over it

23. Leave aside what came between our friendship for an instant
Forgetting it, for the beloved is the beloved

24. It is but a cloud, if you consider
Which will dissipate, unveiling the veiled

25. The evils that harmed affection were halted
And breasts relaxed in welcoming hearts

26. So now it is fitting I say graciously:
