Like sun worshippers in dawn and nightfall

3. Would that I were blind, with no guide
Or that all temptation in the world perished from my sight

4. My eyes will never close
I extinguished them with tears, fangs bared

5. And if I were blind, I would still long for your light
With a shepherd’s heart, faithful, not fickle like women

6. I became infatuated with thoughts of you, and cared not
For a love-sick youth's cries in the night

7. You surrendered me to hopes, saying:
Turn your eyes to hopes that nourish the soul

8. What care I for the future or its nearness
If my eyes are fixed like an idol?

9. Ask me, if you wish, about my past from the beginning
And let your heart drink its fill from me

10. With hopes you can find whatever you seek
For they have an eye appointed to the far future

11. They reign equal to fate in giving and withholding
Veils and distance do not deter those who know them

12. He who is not troubled by them in his familiarity
Will not be miserly in giving and bestowing

13. You left me to guard the harvest like a dog
Who guards the lives of the living by night

14. None remember me except a brother emptiness
Who made me a mirage in the barren desert

15. Man wavers between distraction and emptiness
From fanciful visions to hollow ghosts

16. One moment she laughs at him, the next she grieves
Morning and night she tricks and deceives

17. You women have expanded man's livelihood
And your long heedlessness of all shame

18. Where is truth, whose home is the heart
There lies my heart, folded within me

19. My past is dreams, my future unseen
My present but rags in a leper's hand

20. How my soul lamented the loss of youth
And the withering of branches once green

21. It reminded me of days gone by
In the shade of swaying shadows' embrace

22. When time was spring, love was life
And the earth rang with lute and flute

23. Vineyards yielded their ripened clusters
Dark grapes bundled in green leafy gowns

24. The breeze carried the scent of flowers
Like a messenger carrying tidings to one afar

25. Beautiful were those days, with the wind as companion
And the stars gazing down for precious moments

26. The Nile stretched its waters for our pleasure
And we reigned on the water all around

27. Our throne embroidered with the stars of night
Foaming in the black night sky

28. Its branches heavy with ripe fruit
Too beautiful for words in their charm

29. You are my wine, none as lovely as you
Your glance heals the sickness of love

30. Our kisses in the drooping branches
Our morning greetings to loved ones

31. We sipped it if we wished, joyfully
Bringing sweetness to every pleasure

32. Or abstained, not marring our sober delight
Between white and red, dawn and dusk

33. But where, where are those nights that are gone
Now just tales like Layla's and Dihya's song

34. The soul seeks but cannot recapture them
Save through laments and gut-wrenching sighs

35. My life is now a barren wasteland
After once knowing such joy and bliss

36. Oh how fortune's face has darkened
Like dawn engulfed by the night's blackest veil

37. You remained, O star, shining bright
The days made you glow beyond all lights

38. And you, spring of love, still don your green robes
Though clouds weep and gales wail

39. You bloom and dawn cloaks embroidered in red
Casting off the old, graced in new raiment

40. Though distant on the clouds' horizon
You are still my hope and dream

41. Read my words and smile as you read them
Though they be my ramblings and poems

42. And do not heed the tears of the verses
Though they pour from my troubled heart

43. I do not ask for your pity, though my heart
Seeks comfort from searing pangs

44. I love you, and if I could, I would replace
My love and passion with my anguish

45. Just as you've replaced my health with pain
And expanded my suffering and woe

46. Once I delighted in the world, marveling
At beauty's charm, the most sublime elixir

47. The swaying of leaves and boughs enchanted me
And the graceful stirrings of a beauty

48. But now the branch where once my soul's birds sang out
Has withered, and fills me with no joy

49. Nothing in this world now captivates me
Or rouses me from my misery

50. I've come to deny my days, and they deny me too
As the purest pleasures become estranged

51. When I hear the whispering night breeze
I think it laments the death of my bliss

52. My soul is like the sea, restless, unsettled
Never still, ever tossed in its tumult

53. In summer I cry, "Woe to me from its flames!"
In winter, "Alas for my yearning!"

54. The nights pass, yet I feel them not
Their light and darkness lost to me

55. No dew kissing the cheek of a flower
No lingering sweet fragrance

56. I've died, though an image remains
A soul gone from a living corpse

57. Fate etched my name in loss - I've become
Useless to man except when counted

58. To me, the green of trees is like crutches
That prop up withered bones

59. The stars' brilliance I cannot discern
From the gaze of a dead doe-eyed girl

60. Floating in seas of glass, colorless
Black or green or blue, utterly devoid

61. Even the day and the sun I reject
As if worms polluted their light

62. Expelled from my paradise of bliss
Like Eve banished for her sin

63. Any blessing, if I found it, I could not enjoy
After what I've lost, my fortune and riches

64. I fear someday your beauty will remind me
Of times long past, reopening old wounds

65. The arrow has pierced my heart beyond all effort
To extract it - so let it lie embedded

66. This is my life - how can I grieve it?
My sorrows are beyond consolation

67. Everything rests after its fury
And every eye closes in sleep

68. Do you not see the ocean surging in tumult
Tearing at the heart with care and agony

69. Until it reaches its limit and expires
After raging and crashing mightily

70. So too the soul will find peace
In the sea of loss after exhaustion
