1. O eye, be generous with flowing tears
And weep for a rock with pouring tears

2. Do not fail me when grief makes me weep
For this, O eye, is no time for weakness

3. Weep for Abu Hassân and let flow
For the beautiful guest who camps

4. How good a brother of valor he was
Widows of the tribe came to him at dawn

5. Announcing their claim to him in the house
And how good a neighbor he was in times

6. Of crisis, when people resorted to a weak neighbor
His face showed his kindness

7. Blessed was he, a gentle guide
He did not restrict his grace to himself

8. But was generous to those who sought his bounty
People knew him to be

9. In the highest abode, no paltry man
His gifts were plentiful, and his hospitality

10. The hospitality of a generous man to generous men
His opinion was wise, and his words

11. Contained advice to cure the sickness of rancor
He was no niggard to turn his back

12. Or bear a heavy burden in this life
No greedy man, when asked to give

13. And generosity narrowed the breasts of the greedy
Time has treated me harshly, curse it

14. For the knight of knights and the agile
You left me amidst a worthless people

15. I wander among them like a shackled captive
