1. Pour forth your tears or awaken me,
And show patience, though you will not endure,

2. And say that the best of Banu Sulaym
And their horseman in the valley of al-‘Aqīq

3. I am, after the boulder, weeping
Like one who walks the straight path.

4. By your father, I have not defiled my heart
With any wrongdoing I did or filial impiety.

5. Rather, I found patience to be best
Than sandals and a shaven head.

6. Oh, will not those nights return to us,
And days that brought us the torment of loss?

7. Oh, how my soul yearns, after a life
For us with the sealed wine and the strait.

8. When the nobles resort to judging poems
And those with rights, for arbitration,

9. When among us are the cavaliers of every calamity,
When they are startled, and the youths of valor,

10. When the war brandishes its piercing blades
And the warriors charge at the lightning’s flash,

11. When among us is Mu‘āwiyah ibn ‘Amr
Upon blood, like the Phoenician camel,

12. Then weep for him, for he rejected a praiseworthy man
Of sound judgement, commendable and true,

13. He is the clear, guiding light, not an uncertain guide,
Great in judgement, he dreams of barking.
