With heavy rain, relentless in sorrow’s load

2. Upon a rock, and what youth compares to rock
When claws cannot make a scratch or erode

3. The finest of youths, none reached his peak
Nor would be marred, once reaching its mode

4. I swore by the Lord of lofty al-Sahab
To the sacred house, pilgrimage's abode

5. If Banu 'Amr grieved for him
Then Banu 'Amr lost a lion untold

6. With one palm he grabs, with another
He milks, when the dirt of his valley is cold

7. You see the women of Sulaym
Tears flowing like dew, crying aloud

8. For the generous man, praiseworthy and brave
In the valley of clamor, buried below

9. Let the virtuous rock of Ma'add weep
Of withered dreams and glories forego

10. And horses you shrouded in steeds’ round
Spinning amidst them while breathing their woe

11. Excelling men of many fine traits
Above the rest, with bounties bestowed

12. Rushing when calamities beset
With death's cup, in time of need showed

13. Guarding and protecting, when perils neared
Announcing to the tribe, lest fears erode

14. Leaving it kindled with raging stabs
Harboring them when all else corrode

15. Who will host the guest when north winds gust
Shaking the tent stakes that firmly towed?

16. Its chill made the she-camels huddle for warmth
To the rooms, displaying themselves in full show

17. If you stayed with Banu Sahar's line
Feeding guests is a duty they owed

18. But when Sahar died, I could not control
Preceding tears that plentifully flowed

19. You left your feeder and transporter
By an abandoned grave, its glory owed

20. Let your people cry for the noble traits
And virtues in you that flourished and glowed

21. With you gone, the mare is relieved
If only steeds could see their riders abode!
