1. He who blamed me for loving a wine-skin and speaking of it,
Has met what I met when the saddle-bags were packed.
١. منْ لامني في حبِّ كوزٍ وذكرهِ
فلاقى الذي لا قيتُ إذا حَفَزَ الرَّحمْ
2. So excellent is a wine-skin when the horses have turned back,
And dust is stirred up in the hollows and on the hillsides.
٢. فيا حَبّذا كوزٌ إذا الخَيْلُ أدبَرَتْ
وثارَ غبارٌ في الدَّهاسِ وفي الاكمْ
3. The best kind of youth goes forth in the light of its fire,
Kawyz son of Sakhara on a night of wind and darkness.
٣. فنِعْمَ الفَتى تَعشوا إلى ضَوءِ نارِهِ
كُوَيزُ بنُ صَخرٍ ليلة َ الرّيحِ والظُّلَمْ
4. When the timid wild cows take refuge in its covering,
And take refuge in one who is merciful and gentle.
٤. اذا البازلُ الكوماءُ لاذتْ برفلها
ولاذَتْ لِواذاً بالمُدرّينَ بالسِّلَمْ
5. And the best part of some people and their bounty was shut off
By the palms of a boy who was neither grudging nor mean.
٥. وقد حالَ خيرٌ من أُناسٍ ورِفْدُهُمْ
بكفَّي غلامٍ لا ضنينٍ ولابرمْ
