1. If you spurn me out of fear of a slanderous critic
Of my condition, know that I'm not downcast.

2. What has befallen me now was not of your doing;
My death, O Happiness, is surely near.

3. I'm wearied by the youths' idle rumors that
Say "He's a dubious man" when I pass.

4. My companions, hardships come in waves,
And I'm a youth whom no misfortune downs.

5. My friends, we're both strangers in this place;
Each stranger finds kinship with strangers around.

6. A stranger endures humiliation in every land,
With not a single friend in all the earth.

7. So pay no mind to any fool's idle talk about me,
For as you know, my Lord is He who responds.
