1. Oh what of one whose banner is love of Layla
Whose companion after nightfall is her thoughts
2. To him a piece of Layla's love clings, growing
As nights pass in their lengths and brevity
3. And I've not seen Layla since the day I fancied her
When her apparition stirred me that day of my fancy
4. Of white like the bones' heap as though
Covered by a worn wrap her gown
5. So not the commotion are her fluttering tent walls
For her a chanter calling the string tuneless
6. She herded fruit of meadows then bedded down
A drinking spot by sweet-watered springs her fruits
7. More beautiful than Layla and no frown
From gloom - the night split open shunning her
8. Nor coffee pale in one aloof
In Hauran its sparks blazed and flew
9. About her maidens her like
Matrons their thighs for sale their trade
10. Smoother than them and no musk so fine
From the night more pleasing a tent and its ropes
