1. My heart is full of sorrows,
My soul is sick with separation.

2. In love I've lost my helper,
Tears mixed with blood I weep.

3. For it has shown no mercy to my moans,
Never did it have a heart that's kind.

4. All who abandon their love,
And are struck by fate's blows.

5. Wretched is he who loves God, wretched,
For he is slaughtered without a knife.

6. Despair not, O my heart,
Drowning in passion’s blindness.

7. Though it spends its days in grief,
I ask God to help it.

8. For He knows best what state it’s in.
My paradise is in seeing my loved ones,

9. And conversing with them in a heavenly abode.
How strange is the state of the lover!

10. The Lord has become slave to the beloved.
How many hardships we've sailed,

11. And flung our souls into perdition!
All who love and yearn,

12. Will remain enraptured and concerned,
Until separation and parting are gone,

13. And the gathering of kinsfolk arrives.
With my eyelids and my cheeks,

14. I bear witness the full moon is on his forehead,
My eye finds rest gazing at him,

15. His mouth is sweet water.
By his glances I am struck down,

16. Then my thanks to his smiling lips.
How I sing his praises and pine!

17. Yet he pays no heed to my words.
It's all the same to him if I blame or glorify,

18. One pours while the other gives no drink.
In love he is possessed and mad,

19. Heeding no reproach or praise.
God help the enamored and excused,

20. May the Merciful forgive our faults!
Perhaps he will taste some of what we've tasted,

21. And be disturbed by passion in his repose,
Then find ease after hardship,

22. And forget his sorrows and distress.
As for you, my heart, why do you grieve?

23. You have a Lord who answers prayers.
His door to you is swift and spacious,

24. Even if all doors are shut to you.
And seek the intercession of the Prophet,

25. God will take away all your troubles.
Our religion is in following his way,

26. And that, by God, is the greatest gain.
Whoever has this Chosen One intercede,

27. The Merciful will not let him be lost.
Rather, He will immerse him in His generosity,

28. How will his faith not be strengthened?
For the Rich One will not deprive him.

29. And I conclude my words with the one who adorns them,
The mention of this noble Prophet.
