1. How many black nights yearn for Layla,
And how many brave men lie buried beneath them,

2. With swords unsheathed, lovers of blood -
March on if you wish your body to perish!

3. After this the sea rose in torrents -
How many ships in its depths became planks -

4. Without the blowing of the wind, lives were taken -
Except those He willed, and so He spared them.

5. I mean by my Layla the highest of stations,
From the gifts of the Lord and the guardianships,

6. Indeed, the essence of truth has been revealed
Beyond any thought that occurs or illusion that deceives.

7. O you who ask about the path of free will -
Indeed, free will is leaving behind every habit -

8. If you wish the sweetness of union and bliss -
Step outside the purposes of the selves and you will gain.

9. Abandon all frivolity and diversion -
And beware your gaze, lest you be led astray -

10. Baseless claims are just delusions -
Can you ascend to the sky on a ladder?

11. The knowledge of Sufism has rolled up its rug
From the evil of times and its decline -

12. Whoever wishes to walk upon its path -
Must renounce the world completely, so understand!

13. And do not be ignorant of the science of divine truths -
Jurisprudence is needed by every human -

14. It is my religion and the sum of all faiths -
The law of the Chosen Prophet, honored and revered.
