1. Tell me, O light, how are they
Sweet neighbors with melodious voices

2. Are they still lost in the east wind
Between the aromatic plants and trees

3. What is with them, O my confusion, how are they
They don't heed the baptizing rain

4. May the Merciful hasten their return to me
For separation and avoidance is enough

5. Their absence is a presence
In the evening and at dawn

6. If they heed the rights of the weak who seek refuge
Or lengthen the distances in the wilderness

7. And the conditions of affection
No blame can deter me from love

8. Rather, my passion is increasing
I wish their sandals would tread

9. Upon the cheeks and eyelids
With all the blessings and joy

10. When they are pleased and delighted
My thoughts do not complain of parting

11. For ease comes after hardship
I hope from the Merciful a glance, a look

12. That would soothe the heart and eye
If sweet nights were to return to me

13. In the company of the best of creation
And I were shaded by their glory and shadows
