1. Sleep evaded me as leaves rustled in the night,
And dreams eluded me,

2. Reminding me of one I love who's been absent,
With lips sweet as wine.

3. My soul I'd sacrifice for one who abandoned me,
And whose beauty enthralled me,

4. Distracting me from all distractions,
Oh, the bliss of this longing!

5. My way is love, though you blame me.
I hear no reproach.

6. If the doe were to perish from her love,
No sin would she bear.

7. Alas for the passion of the graceful gazelle!
How long have I yearned!

8. What wonder is this that dark-eyed ones
ensnare the lion?

9. How many a wise one's mind was perplexed,
And he perished in love,

10. Finding delight in such disgrace!
Tell those who blame me long,

11. My love tries me enough, I'll get no rest.
Leave me to love the fair one,

12. For to him I'm a slave.
I swear by the guiding Prophet Muhammad,

13. No heed I pay to censures.
By the righteous, merciful, glorious

14. Messenger of light,
The pure son of the pure,

15. Master of the Family of the Victorious,
I ask him for success in my hopes,

16. And to veil all my faults.
O Prophet, my sin prevented me,

17. From the lofty stations.
Help me, O succor of creation, revive me,

18. O seal of prophets!
