1. From the greatest afflictions and pains
Is the injustice of passion for the love of the unfaithful

2. And of the wonders, abundant wonders
Is my love for him though he is harsh to me

3. Do not deny my anguish and frequent yearning
My illness has persisted, though I know not its cure

4. Do not blame one who, if able, would be shrewd
But I am blinded by the light of the eyes and heart

5. Wretched is a life like mine, for I
Am among the dead though still alive

6. And I wonder, complaining of him yet thanking his deeds
Though passion's deeds contradict my praise

7. Alas! One who has tasted love has not tasted
The sweetness of life or lived in bliss

8. Reason's capacity, oh my sorrow, for
My wise mind that curbs my passions, has ended

9. My sadness for your distance, O youth, has truly pained me
So I am confused without direction or purpose

10. Oh my dear one, meet sincerely she who fascinates me
Oh my disappointment, my regret and my suffering

11. He has burdened me with troubles from my youth
That clothe the brightness of the sun in dark robes

12. No blame touches my mind if it flows
After tears, with blood instead of crying

13. By God, none who love are ever just
Or able to defeat passions' masters

14. Cursed are the hands of my critics for they have added
To my afflictions with their blaming

15. They were not just, had they been just they would not have blamed
One who has not tasted my love's essence

16. Can the sober and the drunk be equal? Can
The healthy know the illness of the sick?

17. Never! The pain of love is not like joy
Just as times of hardship are not like ease

18. By your life, my beloved, I have averted my sight
From the wine of your charming intoxicated eyes

19. No, by He who gave you beauty in your glances
Smiles, cheeks and hair like night itself

20. Never have I betrayed my love or companionship
I have an honor that rises above fame

21. By what crime have you abandoned my company?
By what law did loyalty's breach become permitted?

22. Be generous my masters, make amends and have mercy
And relieve my complaining with your meeting

23. Is it right that I suffer thirst when the water of your pool
Is sweet nectar, every sip being my remedy?

24. You quench those you please with your water
While I die of thirst and deprivation

25. What would the most generous do if asked
And those of noble traits and excellence?

26. Be generous, have mercy, show kindness
And favor me with your meeting to gain my wish

27. It would be easy, by God, if you would
Meet me at my home, submit to my request

28. Yes, by He who made the breeze flow, and through it
The light of stars adorns the sky

29. My soul still has hopes, I have never lost
Hope of meeting, not even for a moment

30. My soul hopes, though I think it difficult,
Yet with God lies the best consolation

31. O Lord, if you do not decree that I be visited
By my beloved, then forgive all my sins

32. I seek forgiveness from God Almighty, for I
Hold fast to the secure rope

33. By the Hashimite, the Chosen One, best of all creation
And our intercessor of great mercy

34. God Almighty has born witness with His own eyes
Truly, evidently, not in a dream

35. Without him the path to Heaven would not
Be paved for the pious and virtuous

36. The worshipers, the praisers, the first for pilgrimage
And those who shun virtue in worldly life

37. O Lord, by the beloved guide Muhammad
And his family and purified companions

38. Forgive all my sins and faults
And let me live the life of the blissful

39. Then bless him, from the Lord of the heavens
O most knowledgeable of scholars and sages
