قال الغراب وقد رأى كلف الورى

1. The raven said, when he saw people's toil
And their frenzy for the chatty nightingale:

١. قالَ الغُراب وَقَد رَأى كَلَفَ الوَرى
وَهَيامَهُم بِالبُلبُلِ الصَدّاحِ

2. "Why do not ears crave my voice like his?
What's the difference between his wing and mine?

٢. لِمَ لا تَهيمُ بِيَ المَسامِعُ مِثلَهُ
ما الفَرقُ بَينَ جَناحِه وَجَناحي

3. I am stronger, my talons sharper by far,
Why do people sleep through my eulogies?

٣. إِنّي أَشَدُّ قِوى وَأَمضى مِخلَباً
فَعَلامَ نامَ الناسُ عَنِ اِمتِداحي

4. Do friends split lovers from their loves
And poison joy and all delight?

٤. أَمُفَرِّقَ الأَحبابِ عَن أَحبابِهِم
وَكُكَدِّرَ اللَذات وَالأَفراحِ

5. How many clear waters resemble poison -
Why are they not as desired as pleasure?

٥. كَم في السَوائِلِ مِن شَبيهٍ بِالطَلا
فَعَلامَ لَيسَ لَها مُقامُ الراحِ

6. Luck depends not on bodies and their shapes;
The essence of all secrets dwells in the soul.

٦. لَيسَ الحُظوظُ مِنَ الجُسوم وَشَكلِها
السُرُّ كُلُّ السِرِّ في الأَرواحِ

7. And song is a gift of heaven, though heaven
Was never pleased by the raven's caw."

٧. وَالصَوتُ مِن نِعَمِ السَماء وَلَم تَكُن
تَرضى السَما عَنِ الصَدّاحِ

8. Fate's judgement cannot be revoked - lament
And strike your neck as the victim of fate.

٨. حَكَمَ القَضاءُ فَإِن نَقِمتَ عَلى القَضا
فَاِضرِب بِعُنقِكَ مُديَةَ الجَرّاحِ
