1. I wept but with hot tears,
And they had barely flowed before I wept with my soul,
١. بَكيت وَلَكِن بِالدُموعِ السَخينَةِ
وَما نَفَذَت حَتّى بَكَيتُ بِمُهجَتي
2. For the perfect moraled, Mustafa's loss moaned,
For he was the beauty of sane chivalry.
٢. عَلى الكامِلِ الأَخلاق وَالنَدبِ مُصطَفى
فَقَد كانَ زَينَ العَقلِ الفُتُوَّةِ
3. The announcer announced his loss, we were almost
Swooning from the awfulness of the saddening speech,
٣. نَعاهُ لَنا الناعي فَكادَت بِنا الدُنى
تَميدُ لِهَولِ الخَطبِ خَطبِ المُروأَةِ
4. And the hearts of both worlds melted yearning
And the tears of sorrow flowed from every eyelid.
٤. وَذابَت قُلوبُ العالَمينَ تَلَهُّفاً
وَسالَت دُموعُ الحُزنِ مِن كُلِّ مُقلَةِ
5. Yes, the greatest writer passed away in Egypt
Leaving in the hearts the greatest remorse.
٥. أَجَل قَد قَضى في مِصرَ أَعظَمُ كاتِبٍ
فَخَلَّفَ في الأَكبادِ أَعظَمَ حَسرَةِ
6. A gallant young man, if only the people had one like him,
The impact of this misfortune would be lighter upon us.
٦. فَتى وَأَبي لَوَ اَنَّ في الناسِ مِثلَهُ
لَهانَ عَلَينا وَقعُ هَذي الرَزيأَةِ
7. If he could be saved by souls from demise
We would sacrifice every obstinate soul.
٧. وَلَو كانَ يُفدى بِالنُفوسِ مِنَ الرَدى
جَعَلنا فَداهُ كُلَّ نَفسٍ أَبِيَّةِ
8. A young man who died before his time, never knew treachery
And never harbored in his soul the love of doubt.
٨. فَتىً ماتَ غَضَّ العُمرِ لَم يَعرِفِ الخَنا
وَلَم يَنطَوي في نَفسِهِ حُبُّ رَيبَةِ
9. He was bold and fearless and he would not
Seek harm except for fearless souls.
٩. وَقَد كانَ مِقداماً جَريئا وَلَم يَكُن
لِيَبغي الرَدى غَيرَ النُفوسِ الجَريأَةِ
10. And he was generous, never stingy with a need
That's why he gave his soul to death.
١٠. وَكانَ جَواداً لا يَضُنُّ بِحاجَةٍ
لِذَلِكَ أَعطى روحَهُ لِلمَنِيَّةِ
11. Peace be upon mighty Egypt after him
For it buried his hopes in the depths of a grave.
١١. سَلامٌ عَلى مِصرَ الأَسيفَةَ بَعدَهُ
فَقَد أَودَعَت آمالَهُ جَوفَ حُفرَةِ
12. The orator of the Nile's land, Malik lies
And you would deliver speech after speech,
١٢. خَطيبُ بِلادِ النيلِ مالَك ساكِناً
وَقَد كُنتَ تُلقي خُطبَةً إِثرَ خُطبَةِ
13. The necks were craned until fully quenched
Will you quench them even with some words?
١٣. تَطاوَلَتِ الأَعناقُ حَتّى اِشرَأَبَّتِ
فَهَل أَنتَ مُسديها وَلَو بَعضَ لَفظَةِ
14. Yes, if not for death you would relieve their thirst
Oh how stubborn the demise was!
١٤. نَعَم كُنتَ لَولا المَوتِ فارِجَ كَربِها
فَيا لِلرَدى مِن غاشِمٍ مُتَعَنِّتِ
15. The souls cracked with sorrow as if
Your death pierced every soul.
١٥. تَفَطَّرَتِ الأَكبادُ حُزناً كَأَنَّما
مَماتَكَ سَهمٌ حَلَّ في كُلِّ مُهجَةِ
16. No mother ever mourned her only child’s loss
More than my mourning and agony over you.
١٦. وَما حَزِنَت أُمٌّ لِفَقدِ وَحيدِها
بِأَعظَمَ مِن حُزني عَلَيك وَلَوعَتي
17. Egypt calls you now, O best departed
And O best one hoped to ward off torment.
١٧. تُناديكَ مِصرُ الآنَ يا خَيرَ راحِلٍ
وَيا خَيرَ مَن يُرجى لِدَفعِ المُلِمَّةِ
18. I knew you refuse every call but mine
Why do you refuse, O Mustafa, every call?
١٨. عَهَدتُكَ تَأبى دَعوَةً غَيرَ دَعوَتي
فَمالَكَ تَأبى مُصطَفى كُلَّ دَعَوَةِ
19. Indeed you were a pillar, O my prolonged craving
You were my sword in the battles and my shield.
١٩. فَقَد تَكُ رَيّاناً فَيا طولَ لَهفَتي
لَقَد كُنتَ سَيفي في الخُطوب وَجَنَّتي
20. Yes, many times you defended Egypt as
Bees defend their homestead.
٢٠. أَجَل طالَما دافَعتَ عَن مِصرَ مِثلَما
يُدافِعُ عَن مَأواهُ نَحلُ الخَلِيَّةِ
21. You awakened it after slumber over slumber
And you roused it from stumbled after stumbled,
٢١. فَأَيقَظَتها مِن رَقدَةٍ بَعدَ رَقدَةٍ
وَأَنهَضَتها مِن كَبوَةٍ تِلوَ كَبوَةِ
22. And you strengthened in its children love towards it
And you were for them the best example.
٢٢. وَقَوَّيتَ في أَبنائِها الحُبَّ نَحوَها
وَكُنتَ لَهُم في ذاكَ أَفضَلَ قُدوَةِ
23. You raised the banner of truth over its expanse
And every patriot joined under it.
٢٣. رَفَعتَ لِواءَ الحَقِّ فَوقَ رُبوعِها
فَضَمَّ إِلَيهِ كُلَّ ذي وَطَنِيَّةِ
24. If you nurtured hearts with love
You were not created for anything but love.
٢٤. لَئِن تَكُ أَترَعتَ القُلوبَ مَحبَّةً
فَإِنَّكَ لَم تُخلَق لِغَيرِ المَحَبَّةِ
25. Sleep in peace and fulfill for your people their share
For long had they slept while you kept vigil.
٢٥. فَنَم آمِناً وَفَيتَ قَومَكَ قِسطَهُم
فَيا طالَما ناموا وَأَنتَ بِيَقظَةِ
26. History will preserve for you immortal memory
For you were the best of people in the best nation.
٢٦. سَيُبقي لَكَ التاريخُ ذِكراً مُخَلَّداً
فَقَد كُنتَ خَيرَ الناسِ في خَيرِ أُمَّةِ
27. Upon you, a thousand greetings from the Merciful
And from our land Egypt, a thousand thousand greetings.
٢٧. عَلَيكَ مِنَ الرَحَمَنِ أَلفُ تَحِيَّةٍ
وَمِن أَرضِن مِصرَ أَلفُ أَلفِ تَحِيَّةِ
