Indeed, the companions resolved upon parting, and went their separate ways.

And the heart was bound to Asma, bound as it was.

And she left you with a pledge that could not be redeemed,

On the day of farewell; by evening the pledge was forfeit.

And al-Bakri's daughter failed you in what she had promised,

So the cord binding you to her became weak and worn.

She stood in view at Dhu Dal, to grieve me,

And whoever has loved must inevitably yearn.

With the neck of a pale doe with a fawn, apart from the herd,

One of the gazelles, watching over an unsteady fawn.

As though her saliva, after sleep, were an evening draught

Of fine wine, aged but not over-aged.

The cupbearers mixed cool water into its wine-jar,

Water from Lina, neither beast-fouled nor turbid.

I kept watching them until there descended

Their camels' forelegs, bearing them from Rakis into a hollow

    Near Sharawra, or behind Adam,

As the camel-drivers hurried along their tracks in bands.

As though my eyes were in the twin buckets of a trained she-camel,

One of the water-drawers, watering a garden of lofty palms.

She stretches the rope, setting spinning within its loop

A great pulley-wheel, moving restlessly to and fro.

She has equipment and helpers who went out early with it:

A pack-saddle, and a bucket that collapses when emptied.

And behind her a driver chants; when she fears

That he will catch her, she stretches her back and neck.

And a bucket-catcher sings; whenever he gains a grip,

His hands upon the crossbars, he pours it out standing.

He pours into a channel where its frogs crawl

Like young girls crawling; you see girdles in its water.

They emerge from watering-basins whose water is moss-green,

Onto the trunks, fearing suffocation and drowning.

Rather, speak of the best of all Qays in ancestral honor,

And its best in bounty, and its best in character:

The leader of horses whose hoof-heels are battered,

Their rawhide and hemp halters firmly secured.

They went to war fat, and returned lean and miscarrying,

After they had been led alongside, plump and pregnant,

Until he brings them back, bent and stripped of gear,

Complaining of their hoof-heels, thigh-sinews, and flanks.

He pursues the course of two men who put forth good deeds,

Who matched kings and outstripped these commoners.

He is the noble steed; if he matches their pace,

Despite his burdens, one such as he could catch them.

Or if they outstrip him, with the head start they had,

Then good like that which they offered would deserve the lead.

Radiant, white, overflowing in bounty, he unfastens from

Captives' hands and from their necks the binding nooses.

And he is the soundest of them in judgment, when news

Of calamities reaches people at dawn or comes by night,

As fine steeds surpass slow horses; he never

Offers his judgment feebly or rashly.

Those seeking bounty in Harim have made,

Together with the petitioners, paths to his doors.

If one day you meet Harim, whatever his circumstances,

You find openhandedness and bounty natural to him.

He withholds from neither a close relative nor a kinsman,

At any time, nor leaves a branch-beater without leaves.

A lion at Aththar, hunting men; when

The lion shrinks from its rivals, he stands firm.

He spears them while they trade missiles; when they trade spear-thrusts,

He fights with swords; when they fight with swords, he grapples.

Such is he, not like one at a loss over his course of action,

Amid the council, whenever a speaker speaks.

If any living man, through rank in this world, could reach

Heaven's horizon, his hand would surely reach that horizon.
