I visited dwellings at al-Naqi', then at Thahmad,
I dwelled in lands struck by tribulation
worn away, deserted by Umm Ma'bad.
Where guards had hardened, from Umm Ma'bad's clan,
أَرَبَّتlingered بِهاover them الأَرواحُthe winds كُلَّevery عَشِيَّةٍevening

The winds lingered over them every evening,
Spirits had settled there each evening
so nothing remained but traces of clustered tents,
Leaving naught but shifts of tents wind-pinned,
وَغَيرُand traces of ثَلاثٍthree كَالحَمامِlike pigeons خَوالِدٍenduring

and traces of three enduring hearthstones, like pigeons,
And but three, like everlasting pigeons
and year-old ashes, cold and caked together.
And anxious ostriches and brooding camels,
فَلَمّاso when رَأَيتُI saw أَنَّهاthat they لاnot تُجيبُنيthey answer me

So when I saw that they did not answer me,
When I saw they would not respond to me
I rose to a thick-cheeked she-camel, like a massive camel-bull.
I rose like a tom-cat, fleet and bold,
جُمالِيَّةٌa bull-like she-camel لَمdid not يُبقِleave سَيريmy travel وَرِحلَتيand my journey

A bull-like beast: my travel and journey had left
With my smooth-gaited she-camel, after that trek
no fat upon her back except the stump of her hump.
Naught of saddle or supplies left but what she bore,
مَتىwhen ماever تُكَلِّفهاyou task her with مَآبَةَa return to مَنهَلٍa watering place

Whenever you task her with returning to a watering place,
Whene’er you task her with a watering hole
whether she is spared or exhausted on the way and strained,
Too far, and she grows weary reaching it spent,

She turns it back though the whip reveal its coils
going at nightfall, swift again the next day.

Like your resolve: press her, and you find her successful,
Her teats swing with pure milk, pouring it down
enduring; ease up on her, and she increases her pace.
To the cleft of the destitute, freshly drawn.

The hollows behind her ears ooze dark sweat, as though it were
She hastens twilight's foragers and wards off
the thickened residue of tar in cauldrons.

Like Khensa, loud-voiced, raucous, bred for war,
over her dried vulva, denied its draught.

She came armed, by strength made formidable,
another dose of the tightly plaited rawhide lash.
Securing the frightened fugitive's shelter,

Like a noble, snub-nosed cow, dark about the cheeks,
With two ears that distinguish deliverance in them
wandering and terrified, mother of a calf.
To the planted heel of feet firmly shod,
غَدَتshe went forth بِسِلاحٍwith a weapon مِثلُهُone like it يُتَّقىone is protected بِهِwith it

She went forth with a weapon of the kind that shields one,
And two eyes whose upper lids widen and stare
and steadies the heart of the fearful solitary.
As if thickly rimmed with kohl daubed on the rim,
وَسامِعَتَينِand two ears تَعرِفُyou recognize العِتقَnoble breeding فيهِماin them

And two ears in which you recognize noble breeding,
She wandered alone through meadow or waste, till beasts
beside the root of a pointed horn with polished ridges;
waylaid her, from every covert and nest,
وَناظِرَتَينِand two eyes تَطحَرانِthat expel قَذاهُماtheir specks
كَأَنَّهُماas though both مَكحولَتانِwere kohl-lined بِإِثمِدِwith antimony
and two eyes that cast out their specks,
Unforgiven her privacies, she met her fate
as though both were lined with antimony.
In the end, by the hands of those she had suckled,
طَباهاlured her away ضَحاءٌmorning grazing أَوor خَلاءٌopen country فَخالَفَتso came in her absence

Morning grazing or open country lured her away; behind her back came
Blood by a corral, the birds shun it round,
predators to him in his thicket shelter and bed.
Some joints for the cookpot, neatly butchered,
أَضاعَتshe neglected him فَلَمso not تُغفَرwere forgiven لَهاfor her خَلَواتُهاher solitary wanderings

فَلاقَتso she found بَياناًclear evidence عِندَat آخِرِthe last مَعهَدِknown place
She neglected him; her solitary wanderings went unforgiven,
She shrugged off the absence of every beauty,
so she found clear evidence at his last known place:
And dreaded archers on every perch hid,
دَماًblood عِندَbeside شِلوٍa severed limb تَحجُلُhop الطَيرُthe birds حَولَهُaround it
وَبَضعَand pieces of لِحامٍflesh فيin إِهابٍa hide مُقَدَّدِtorn to strips
blood beside a severed limb, birds hopping round it,
Then sauntered like one relaxed and secure,
and pieces of flesh within a hide torn to strips.
While right behind her the doom drew ahead,
وَتَنفُضُand searches out عَنهاaround her غَيبَthe hidden depths of كُلَّevery خَميلَةٍthicket

She probes around her into every thicket's hidden depths,
Unaware of their nearness until she beheld
and fears the bowmen of al-Ghawth at every ambush.
Them sitting her burrows, none left unoccupied,
فَجالَتso she swerved عَلىonto وَحشِيِّهاher outer flank وَكَأَنَّهاand as though she

She swerved onto her outer flank, as though she were
They charged her together, both flanks at once,
clad in Raziqi linen, banded at the arms.
She bolted, though harried until spent and done,

She did not know how near the parting was until she saw them,
Driving off those ahead, or dropping behind,
already seated along her passageways, at every station.
Until the racers pressed and hemmed her in,

They sprang upon her from both her flanks,
But she saved herself from the grip of death
and she wheeled; when they force her to race, she strains.
By realizing her sole escape: face their arrows!

She outstrips those that come at her from behind,
Smooth-running, no hitch nor stumble in her pace,
and if the swiftest get ahead of her, she hunts them down.
Her evasion by excellently curving turns,

What saved her from death's engulfing surge—since she
She let out and came between them and herself
realized that awaiting the arrows meant being struck down—
A cloud like birds scattered out of their nest,
نَجاءٌswift escape مُجِدٌّrelentless لَيسَnot فيهِin it وَتيرَةٌany slackening

was relentless flight, without a moment's slackening,
With sandled hooves brought together she reached
and her driving them off with a black, defending horn.
A twisting wadi with steeply heaped sides,

She strove and cast between them and herself
To a ruin whose evening and morning shifts
dust, as smoke from smoldering gharqad fires billows up.
Saw her wandering and taking respite there,

To a ruin she had trekked nights on end
to a high-set chest, fleshy along the backbone.

Toward Harim are her noonday travel and her swift gait;
No matter what hour you come upon him
she sets out in the long night, and journeys at dawn.
Inauspicious or fair, disastrous or blest,

Toward Harim she traveled three nights from al-Liwa;
Is he not famed for freeing the fettered prisoner,
how excellent the journey of one confident and purposeful!
His sword striking down tyrants without relent,

Like Abu Shibl, a fierce lion defending his den
at a feared unlucky hour, or in fortunate times.
If he finds no helpers will never submit,

fierce in his pelting, with tongue and hand.

When Qays ibn 'Aylan attained the utmost
and a bearer of burdens and a refuge for the banished.

But the praise of men cannot make immortal.

For if praise could make people immortal, you would not die;
Provision for the day you pass away, which,

Though the soul reject it, is the final appointment.

though the soul abhors it, the final appointment.
