لَم أَرَ سوقَةً كَاِبنَي سِنانٍ
وَلاnor حُمِلاwere both carried وَجَدِّكَby your grandfather فيin الحُجورِthe laps
وَلا حُمِلا وَجَدِّكَ في الحُجورِ
I have seen no commoners like the two sons of Sinan,
I did not see a companion like the two sons of Sinan,
nor, by your grandfather, have two been cradled in laps
Nor a carrier of your religion in the hearts,
أَشَدَّstronger عَلىagainst صُروفِvicissitudes of الدَهرِtime إِدّاًin might
أَشَدَّ عَلى صُروفِ الدَهرِ إِدّاً
وَخَيراًand better فيin الحَياةِlife وَفيand in القُبورِthe graves
وَخَيراً في الحَياةِ وَفي القُبورِ
more powerful against the vicissitudes of time,
More steadfast against the vicissitudes of time,
or better in life and in their graves.
And better in life and in the graves.
