My two reproaching women came at dawn; I said, 'Gently!'

Do you two reproach me for my passion for Salma?

For time's vicissitudes have left me

one who knows goodness and shuns humiliation.

You two have already tested me in matters

by whose like one lives, if only you understood:

my safeguarding weighty duties and my honor,

    and my giving wealth to a close companion;

and my holding myself firm when matters turn grave,

    when the coward's lung is set trembling;

and my keeping a trust, and my endurance

    through whatever misfortunes time has brought;

and my defense of worthy deeds of honor,

    with my wealth and the fierce lashes of my tongue;

and my restraining myself from harming neighbors,

and my open defiance of whoever seeks to defy me openly.

Many an ally I have been faithful to in his absence,

and were I the one away, he would not spurn me.

And many a wilderness where lives are lost,

far-reaching, its hard uplands all alike—

the sandgrouse's nesting hollows lie in rows upon it,

as though their chicks there were afani plants.

I drove across it, while the snakes lay sluggish,

    a stout-barreled, long-necked, high-spirited camel,

strong at the roots of his ribs, solid-built,

broad-chested, with his lower neck swaying.

He presses along the road and masters it,

with his rider upon him—a swift camel.

As though the grinding of his two fangs, whenever

he rubs them together, were two akhtab birds trilling.

When he grows headstrong and surges on, he is checked

by a plaited Yemeni rein, with gentle handling.

Once I have taxed his utmost strength, it almost

    flies off—the saddle—but for the two girth-straps.

So I shall not abandon the memory of Sulayma,

or my love-verses for the woman of Banu al-'Idan,

throughout all time, as long as my throat stays moist,

and as long as Aban's enduring rocks stand firm.

Come to your senses, ease your blame, and speak,

I adjure you both, of what you already know.

For distance does not destroy my affection,

nor any mishap that time may bring.

And in wars, when they burst into flame,

I answer the one seeking help when he calls me.

And my neighbor need not fear that I will entice

his wife, in secret or in public.

And the one who feels no aversion to her comes to her,

when the curtains are drawn close about the smoke.

And many a care I have dispelled on an Arhabi camel,

white in color, from the choicest purebred stock,

    powerfully knit, thick-necked and massive,

long-striding, with his lower neck stretched straight.

So may you gain more blessings, and may blame pass you by,

when you bring my saddle near Sinan.

A young man who takes nothing from his friends,

and never stints what his two hands hold.

They forbid that you ever be made to suffer abasement,

    when another is wronged—two qualities:

giving you never taint with reminders of your bounty,

    when the maiden with budding breasts draws near the smoke;

and your leading lean-bellied horses against the enemy,

marked for battle, with two armies at your side.

Nor do you falter when the men turn earnest,

nor are you helpless or fearful at heart.

May my father be your ransom, and may my life ransom you,

and my wealth, for it came to me from him.

A young man who, if I come to him seeking bounty,

    scant of means and asking a gift, bestows gifts on me;

and if adversity carries me far away from him,

and I miss the sharing-out, he still provides for me.
