أَرادَتshe sought جَوازاًpassage بِالرُسَيسِat al-Rusays فَصَدَّهاbut they turned her back
أَرادَت جَوازاً بِالرُسَيسِ فَصَدَّها
رِجالٌmen قُعودٌseated فيin الدُجىthe darkness بِالمَعابِلِwith broad-headed arrows
رِجالٌ قُعودٌ في الدُجى بِالمَعابِلِ
She sought passage at al-Rusays, but was turned back
By men seated in the darkness with broad-headed arrows.
كَأَنَّas though مُدَهدىtumbled حَنظَلٍcolocynth fruit حَيثُwhere سَوَّفَتshe sniffed
كَأَنَّ مُدَهدى حَنظَلٍ حَيثُ سَوَّفَت
بِأَعطانِهاat her watering places مِنfrom جَزِّهاher cropping بِالجَحافِلِwith the lips
بِأَعطانِها مِن جَزِّها بِالجَحافِلِ
Like tumbled colocynth fruits, where she had sniffed,
Lay what she had cropped with her lips at her watering places.
