أَلاAh! لَيتَwould that شِعريmy knowledge هَلwhether يَرىsee الناسُpeople ماwhat أَرىI see
مِنَof الأَمرِthe matter أَوor يَبدوbecomes apparent لَهُمto them ماwhat بَداbecame apparent لِياto me
Ah, would that I knew: do people see what I see
of things, or does what became clear to me become clear to them?
بَداbecame clear لِيَto me أَنَّthat اللَهَGod حَقٌّreal فَزادَنيso increased me
إِلىin addition to الحَقِّthe truth تَقوىreverent fear of اللَهِGod ماwhat كانَwas بادِياapparent
It became clear to me that God is real, and I gained
greater fear of God, along with that truth, through what became clear.
بَداbecame clear لِيَto me أَنَّthat الناسَpeople تَفنىperish نُفوسُهُمtheir lives
وَأَموالُهُمand their wealth وَلاand not أَرىI see الدَهرَtime فانِياperishing
It became clear to me that people's lives perish,
and their wealth; yet I do not see time perish.
وَأَنّيand that I مَتىwhenever أَهبِطI descend مِنَof الأَرضِthe earth تَلعَةًa valley
أَجِدI find أَثَراًa trace قَبليbefore me جَديداًfresh وَعافِياand faded
And that whenever I descend into a valley in the land,
I find traces from before my time, fresh and faded.
أَرانيI see myself إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle بِتُّI spend the night بِتُّI spend the night عَلىin accordance with هَوىًdesire
وَأَنّيand that I إِذاwhen أَصبَحتُI reach morning أَصبَحتُI reach morning غادِياsetting out at dawn
I find that, when I spend the night, I spend it as I please,
and that, when morning finds me, it finds me setting out
إِلىtoward حُفرَةٍa pit أُهدىI am led إِلَيهاto it مُقيمَةٍlasting
يَحُثُّurges onward إِلَيهاtoward it سائِقٌa driver مِنfrom وَرائِياbehind me
toward an enduring pit to which I am led,
while a driver behind me urges me toward it.
كَأَنّيas though I وَقَدand already خَلَّفتُI left behind تِسعينَninety حِجَّةًyears
خَلَعتُI cast off بِهاwith them عَنfrom مَنكِبَيَّmy two shoulders رِدائِياmy cloak
It is as though, now that I have left ninety years behind,
I had cast my cloak from my shoulders along with them.
بَداbecame clear لِيَto me أَنّيthat I لَستُI am not مُدرِكَcatching up with ماwhat مَضىhas passed
وَلاnor سابِقاًoutstripping شَيئاًanything إِذاwhen كانَis جائِياcoming
It became clear to me that I cannot recover what has passed,
nor outrun anything that is yet to come.
أَرانيI see myself إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle شِئتُI wish لاقَيتُI encounter آيَةًa sign
تُذَكِّرُنيreminds me بَعضَsome of الَّذيwhat كُنتُI was ناسِياforgetful
I find that, whenever I wish, I encounter a sign
reminding me of some of what I had forgotten.
وَماand not إِنemphatic particle أَرىI see نَفسيmy life تَقيهاprotecting it كَريهَتيmy prowess in battle
وَماand not إِنemphatic particle تَقيprotect نَفسيmy life كَرائِمُthe choicest of مالِياmy wealth
And I do not see my prowess in battle shielding my life,
nor do my choicest possessions shield my life.
أَلاindeed لاnot أَرىI see عَلىdespite الحَوادِثِthe calamities باقِياsurviving
وَلاnor خالِداًabiding forever إِلّاexcept الجِبالَthe mountains الرَواسِياfirmly rooted
Indeed, I see nothing surviving the blows of fate,
nothing abiding forever, save the firmly rooted mountains,
وَإِلّاand except السَماءَthe sky وَالبِلادَand the lands وَرَبَّناand our Lord
وَأَيّامَناand our days مَعدودَةًnumbered وَاللَيالِياand the nights
and the sky, the lands, and our Lord;
our days are numbered, and so are the nights.
أَلَمhave you not تَرَsee أَنَّthat اللَهَGod أَهلَكَdestroyed تُبَّعاًTubbaʿ
وَأَهلَكَand destroyed لُقمانَLuqman بنَson of عادٍʿAd وَعادِياand ʿAdiya
Have you not seen that God destroyed Tubbaʿ,
and destroyed Luqman son of ʿAd, and ʿAdiya,
وَأَهلَكَand destroyed ذاthe possessor of القَرنَينِthe two horns مِنfrom قَبلِbefore ماwhat تَرىyou see
وَفِرعَونَand Pharaoh جَبّاراًa tyrant طَغىtransgressed وَالنَجاشِياand the Negus
and destroyed Dhu al-Qarnayn before what you now see,
and Pharaoh, a tyrant who transgressed, and the Negus?
أَلاindeed لاnot أَرىI see ذاa possessor of إِمَّةٍgood fortune أَصبَحَتhas dawned بِهِupon him
فَتَترُكُهُthen leave him الأَيّامُthe days وَهيَwhile it كَماjust as هِياit is
Indeed, I see no man upon whom good fortune has dawned
whom the days leave with that fortune unchanged.
أَلَمhave you not تَرَsee لِلنُعمانِfor al-Nuʿman كانَwas بِنَجوَةٍon safe high ground
مِنَfrom الشَرِّharm لَوif أَنَّthat اِمرَأًa man كانَwere ناجِياsafe
Have you not seen al-Nuʿman, once on safe high ground,
beyond harm—if any man could ever be safe?
فَغَيَّرَso swept away عَنهُfrom him مُلكَthe kingship of عِشرينَtwenty حِجَّةًyears
مِنَof الدَهرِtime يَومٌa day واحِدٌsingle كانَwas غاوِياruinous
Yet twenty years of kingship were swept away from him
by a single day of time, a ruinous day.
فَلَمso not أَرَI saw مَسلوباًone dispossessed لَهُbelonging to him مِثلُthe like of مُلكِهِhis realm
أَقَلَّfewer in صَديقاًfriends باذِلاًgiving freely أَوor مُواسِياoffering support
So I have seen no man stripped of a realm like his
with fewer friends to give freely or offer support.
فَأَينَwhere then الَّذينَthose whom كانَhe used to يُعطيgive جِيادَهُhis fine steeds
بِأَرسانِهِنَّwith their halters وَالحِسانَand the beauties الغَوالِياthe costly ones
Where, then, are those to whom he used to give his fine steeds,
with their halters, and the costly beauties?
وَأَينَand where الَّذينَthose whom كانَhe used to يُعطيهِمُhe gives them القُرىvillages
بِغَلّاتِهِنَّwith their yields وَالمِئينَand hundreds of camels الغَوادِياgoing out at dawn
And where are those to whom he used to give villages,
with their yields, and camels by the hundred setting out at dawn?
وَأَينَand where الَّذينَthose who يَحضُرونَthey attend جِفانَهُhis great bowls
إِذاwhen قُدِّمَتthey were brought out أَلقَواthey cast عَلَيهاupon them المَراسِياthe anchors
And where are those who would gather round his great bowls,
casting their anchors upon them whenever they were brought out?
رَأَيتُهُمُI saw them لَمnot يُشرِكواshare بِنُفوسِهِمwith their own lives
مَنِيَّتَهُhis death لَمّاwhen رَأَواthey saw أَنَّهاthat it هِياit indeed
I saw that they would not risk their own lives
to share his doom, once they saw that death was certain,
خَلاexcept أَنَّthat حَيّاًa clan مِنof رَواحَةَRawaha حافَظواthey kept faith
وَكانواand they were أُناساًpeople يَتَّقونَthey guard against المَخازِياdisgrace
except that a clan of Rawaha kept faith,
and they were people who guarded against disgrace.
فَسارواso they journeyed لَهُto him حَتّىuntil أَناخواthey made camels kneel بِبابِهِat his gate
كِرامَthe noble المَطاياriding beasts وَالهِجانَand the white purebred camels المَتالِياfollowed by their young
So they journeyed to him, until they made their camels kneel at his gate—
noble mounts, and white she-camels with their young following.
فَقالَso he said لَهُمto them خَيراًkind words وَأَثنىand spoke well عَلَيهِمُof them
وَوَدَّعَهُمand bade them farewell وَداعَthe farewell of أَنthat لاno تَلاقِياmeeting again
He spoke kindly to them and praised them,
and bade them the farewell of those who would not meet again.
وَأَجمَعَand he resolved on أَمراًa course كانَwas ماwhat بَعدَهُafter it لَهُfor him
وَكانَand he was إِذاwhen ماemphatic particle اِخلَولَجَgrew tangled الأَمرُthe matter ماضِياresolute
And he resolved upon a course whose consequences were his to bear;
and when affairs grew tangled, he would press on.
