رَأَتshe saw رَجُلاًa man لاقىexperienced مِنَfrom العَيشِlife غِبطَةًgood fortune
وَأَخطَأَهُand passed him by فيهاin it الأُمورُcalamities العَظائِمُgreat
She saw a man who had found good fortune in life,
And its great calamities had passed him by.
وَشَبَّand grew up لَهُfor him فيهاin it بَنونَsons وَتوبِعَتand were made to follow in succession
سَلامَةُsafety أَعوامٍof years لَهُfor him وَغَنائِمُand spoils
And sons grew up for him there, and there came in succession
Years of safety for him, and spoils.
فَأَصبَحَso he became مَحبوراًjoyful يُنَظِّرُlooks intently حَولَهُaround him
بِمَغبَطَةٍin enviable happiness لَوif only أَنَّthat ذالِكَthat دائِمُlasting
So he became joyful, looking around him
In enviable happiness—if only that would last!
وَعِنديand I have مِنَfrom الأَيّامِthe days ماwhat لَيسَis not عِندَهُwith him
فَقُلتُso I said تَعَلَّمknow أَنَّماthat … only أَنتَyou حالِمُa dreamer
Yet I have learned from the days what he has not,
So I said: Know that you are only dreaming.
لَعَلَّكِperhaps you يَوماًone day أَنthat تُراعيbe shaken بِفاجِعٍby a grievous calamity
كَماjust as راعَنيshook me يَومَon the day of النُتاءَةِal-Nutāʾah سالِمُSalim
Perhaps one day you will be shaken by a grievous calamity,
As Salim shook me on the day of al-Nutāʾah.
يُديرونَنيthey turn me عَنaway from سالِمٍSalim وَأُديرُهُمand I turn them
وَجِلدَةُand the skin بَينَbetween العَينِthe eye وَالأَنفِand the nose سالِمُSalim
They turn me away from Salim, and I turn them back;
And Salim is the skin between the eye and the nose.
