Will a fleet she-camel carry me to the noble men,

    striding like a red-legged, scant-feathered male ostrich,

which on an overcast day keeps running in haste

toward Hadan's curving sands, for fear of rain,

until one day she reaches them, already grown gaunt

from travel in the midday heat or a night journey before dawn?

A people whose glory—and pride, if they boast—you see

in a house of honor pressed close to the moon.

They stand surety; their horses are ever

tousle-forelocked, each bearing a man with sword drawn.

Of Dhubyan's stock, whose foremost nobles trace their lineage

to a root of glory never held in contempt.

They sent their horses out across every battlefield,

as the smith's hammering scatters sparks.

They defend their home ground on the morning of terror,

and give aid in hard times with blood-money payments.

Tell the various tribes in their encampments—

and the people's messenger may bring the news—

were it not for Sinan and defense born of his fierce zeal,

a captive from among you would still be in an oppressor's power.

The neighbor's protector on the day of terror, as they know,

and a man of ample bounty, without reminders of favors or bitterness.

Indeed, I have witnessed some of his noble encounters,

not hearsay, nor the idle talk of a babbler.

In Dhubyan's days, when Time bit into them,

he was their deliverance from the tumult of the throngs.
